Tamiya Tigers motorized?
Posted by VTmodeldude28 on Saturday, March 30, 2013 9:00 AM
Are any of Tamiya's Tiger kits motorized? I want to pick up a cheaper version but don't want to deal with the holes on the bottom.

Thanks

2. Tamiya 1/35 M41 Walker Bulldog

The 1970s version was motorized. The later 1990-2000 versions were not.

I know that Tamiya made a 1/25 scale motorized early version Tiger.

The 1/25 scale one wasn't motorized, in fact it came with a complete interior (as complete as a 1970s kit came) with plastic torsion bars, engine, etc.

I bought one when I returned to the States in 1991 for $50 at the Armor School book store on Fort Knox. Still haven't built it though.

Jester did a little while though, you can see it isn't motorized. http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/3/t/140316.aspx

I thought you wanted to graduate from Tamiya kits? Looking for their Tigers is like going back to middle school.

Rob, are you sure about that? I built the one with the interior, but there were all kinds of slots and holes that made no sense unless it was to allow for switches and wiring. It was explained to me by a really old time modeler that it was because it originally came ready for motorization or that a motor had been in the initial release.

I know the old Tamiya 1/25 scale Jadgpanther I have is motorized, but the Tiger I have doesn't have anything that looks like the remnants of motorization. Of course, mine was purchased in 1991 and maybe they retooled later it to make it non-motorized, but I doubt it.

So be it, then. I stand corrected.

I suspected the 1/25 Tiger was once motorized because of the separate link tracks, similar to those on their Panther and Jagdpanther.

I did Tamiya's 1/16 Tiger 1 a few years back awesome kit....not cheap! I think there were 3 of us doing a small group build of them.

I wish I still had the pics. They were on an old computer that bit the dust and we couldn't retrieve anything.

The old Tamiya 1/25th Tiger and Centurion scale kit were motorized when first released, actually wired remote controlled. even with the interior. I have one of the tigers with the original kits with the gearbox, the tank was built by my father in the 70's.

The tank was unique in that the gearbox with the two motors were in the back, and they powered two drive shafts that ran under the turret towards a differential gearbox in the front of the vehicles that would turn the sprockets. All of this would be concealed by the plastic interior detailing. This is why the kit supplied engine is so out of scale as it is a cover for the gearbox.

These kits are very rare and with the original box art are non existent and are worth $$$$$

The old school tamiya tiger I kit from the 70's was also motorized in the past. It has the standard motorized hull layout with the holes underneath. For some reason that and their old panther / jagdpanther kits are still in production. They are on the cheap end and can be found with out much difficulty but no longer come with the gearbox. Like mall their armor 1/35 kits from the era they were released both in motorized with a white box, and with the wire remote control with the nicer box art.

Like the 1/25 the versions with the gearbox and the original box art are expensive as they are rare and are considered collectible. At some point (probably the 80's) Tamiya dropped their motorized option and sold their kits with the plane white box that we all know.  These are the versions of the tiger that we see today

Thanks for the info armourguy, I built the non-motorized version in the late 70's myself.  It's still in a box in the attic.  Come to think of it, I may even have a contact print in black and white somewhere.....gads, let me see if I can find and post that photo.
