Hi Tankluver - In SS Armor On the Eastern Front 1943-1945 (Vuksic) there is a section devoted to the relief attempt on Kovel. There are several pictures of Panthers including the ones posted above. Pics include some 5th and 8th company Panthers. The 8th company seems to be sporting a scruffy white wash (at least at the onset). There are also a couple pics of 511 with a fairly new looking WW. It also appears to me that much of the camo in the latter part of the operation is mud that is smeared onto the surfaces to match the local surroundings. See R02 above. The one pic in there of a 251/7 looks to be painted overall  DY with no camo. (Just one example though.)

Hi Tankluver,

this is not in any way a historically correct reply but anyway.

------------

16.3.1944

II./PzRgt 5 was sent to follow GERMANIA to the direction of Kowel.
MG's and ammunition followed on open wagons. Kowel was encirceled with 4,000 men. WIKING's orders were to relief the city.

Armor Battles of the Waffen-SS, 1943-45,  Will Fey

............

Kowel is in the North Western Ukraine on the border to Poland.

There are some nice color plates in Dragons # 6358 Panther A Premium Edition depicting three Wiking Division Panthers, Poland 44 and if the Dragon research team got it right Green and Red-brown random stripes over Dark Yellow would be correct for turret # 625.

Green and Red-brown cloudy patches over Dark Yellow would be OK for turret # R02.

Happy to send you a scan, the instruction is in color.

That seems to correspond with this picture of R02:

Very Best Regards

Johan

As far as I know, sometime in 1943, Panzer Grey was superseded by Dunkelgelb (Panzer Yellow??) overall from the factory.   Additional Brown & Green colors were furnished to the field units  and applied over the yellow to provide the best camouflage for the  unit"s AO (Area of Operation)

Hi all, Im trying to do my painting of halftrack and a Panther, looking at another kits paint guide they have a half track for the Wiking division in only panzer tan color, then after looking at some German newsreel on the assault on kowel, which I believe is early 45 the vehicles have some white. I also looked at the recon unit kit from dragon which shows a soldiers with a half track and that too is panzer tan. Would it be safe to just paint all the kits panzer tan then? does anyone have any reference material to that paticular time
