Soviet Armor In Afganistan-Color?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 11:51 AM
Does anyone out there have some good color recipes for Soviet Armor when they were in Afganistan. I like to use Tamiya Colors.

Any help would be great.

Thanks Greg

take a look at Armorama.com
They had a gallery there of Afghani armor. Also, there is a gallery showing many Iraqi armor units (albeit, a lot of them are wrecked). maybe that'll be some help.
Also, try this link. There are pics of common vehicles. The page is in german, so you can use altavista to translate it if you wish:

Keep in mind that all this armour is soviet made, and in many instances carries the same colour scheme, or just a basic desert sand scheme

This link will also give you an overview of what armor the Taliban had (prior invasion) and you could do a search on these items alone:

I think most of them ended up a rusty black.... Kidding. Take a look at the links above.

Speeder,

I have seen a couple of Soviet Afgan era tanks up close and personal (so to speak) while playing over here in the big sand box and while it has been 20+ years since the soviets actually owned and used them from what I have seen most were the stadard Soviet green with lots and lots of sun fading and dust. The weather here is real harsh... So it does a real number on paint... I would suggest "fading" the basic Soviet green color. then weather the heck out of it from there if you are planing a Soviet Afgan model...

Good luck,

Tom

I have pictures and reference material showing soviet tanks in green (tamiya x-65, field grey) and towards the end of the war in Afghanistan they started spraying light grey over the green basecoat. If you can find it, the Concord publication "Armor of the Afghanistan War" has a lot of good reference photos.
