Sorry I'm on my phone. Thanks for the interest guys, those are some great shots. I do apologize for not getting back sooner but the real world has caught up with me and there seems to be less hours in the day than I can deal with.i still do not know where we are going with this one.

Yeah I know where you are coming from. Like I said, im not sure how the US military works. I know when I was there I wasnt even allowed to tell my family where I was. What I would say no to would be any photos with mission specific gear, maps, radios etc. Even photos showing blind spots for Towers, vehicles, current or possible fire lanes. That can all effect the security of pers on the ground. People scour the net for that kind of information all the time because even though it might be a small bit of info, it can all come together to make a nice profile on a base, person, unit etc. Its just good to be conscious of it. Im not saying you shouldn't, but be careful.

Photo of vehicles in NTC isn't a problem. My son-in-law is in A-stan and my son was there about a year ago.

Just watch what pictures you post up mate. Im not sure how US military do things, but posting pictures of some items are a security breach. And could vet your dad in trouble. Just in case you didnt know.

Looks like the NTC (National Training Center), Ft Irwin, CA.  I spent three years out there as an OC (Observer / Controller , i.e. Trainer).  One hell of a hot, dusty place.  It does replicate Afghanistan well though.

On to the vehicles.  To be more specific, on the left is an International Maxx Pro MRAP, at right is an M1151 Uparmored HMMWV.

Gino thanks for that detailed definition of a MRAP vehicle, for the build to go ahead these will define the parameters. Blairy I too like the Bushmaster, I keep meaning to get the kit.

Great description!

I personally like the Australian Bushmaster.... a decade in Afghanistan with 100's of strikes and NO fatalities.

I also have a supacat Jackel is it considered a MRAP?

No, it is not an MRAP. Other than a v-hull design, it is neither Mine Resistant (MRap) nor Ambush Protected (mrAP).  The open top and lack of armor leaves it very vulnerable to attack.

MRAPs are a specifically designed class of vehicles which are heavily armored to protect the crew against mines and ambushes.

Some basic MRAP characteristics:  MRAP vehicles have V-shaped hulls to deflect explosive forces originating below the vehicle, thereby protecting the vehicle and its passenger compartment.  Typically, these explosions are from land mines, but they can also be IEDs.  This design dates to the 1970s when it was first introduced in specialized vehicles built by and for the Rhodesian army, and further developed by South African manufacturers.  They are designed with all round coverage against 7.62mm ammunition (the glass is 7.62mm multi-strike resistant).  They can survive the detonation of a 30-pound TNT charge under the front and rear axles and a 15-pound charge under the center of the chassis.  Ballistic protection is provided for the radiator, tires, battery compartment, fuel tanks, engine and transmission.  The V-shaped hull is specifically designed to redirect the blats out and away from the vehicles passenger area.  While the vehicle may be disabled by the explosion, its passengers will not be injured, and the vehicle can be recovered and repaired.

If we go ahead we will have to decide such thing amongst ourselves. I'm pretty open. My main reasons for this is mainly to. Get back to armour and to see as many of these fantastic vehicles built as possible.

Mr T, it could be because of the V shape hull but it actually looks more like a MATV if it had a top

I've just been looking into the amount of MRAP vehicles available in kit form at the moment. Would anybody be interested in a group build covering any modern MRAP from any Nation in a modern conflict?
Any ideas etc. suggestions etc. or interest please post here and we can see if we can get one off the ground.
