1/35 Dora railway gun
Posted by mistydog118 on Friday, May 31, 2013 8:14 AM

I have not been modeling that long, just since I retired 4 years ago. I have built the other two railway guns that was made for w.w.2 by Germany, and I had so much fun and enjoyment building them that I would try the 1/35 Dora.

I went on E-BAY to see what I would have to spend, sticker schook set in. Over the course of two years of trying to get one at aprice that I could aford, I have to get real lucky.I saw prices ranging from $900 an up.

That lucky day came about three weeks ago.I bid on one ,and won it for $633 and that included shipping. I still do not believe that I got it for that price.

Now this is were the problem starts. I need help in finding what needs to be corrected and what are some of the problems that I might ran in to and how to fix them.So of what is like the lenght of the barrel and maybe rebuilding walk ways, ect.

I have looked at differance in some of the post at other web sites, but I need all the help I can get building this monster. Yes I did say monster do to the size of this kit. The track that I have put together measures 7 feet long. I read thatat it is best to build this first so you have a place to put the rail cars as you build them.

I also purchace the decals for this, more schooking news, they cost $60, I would have felt that the cost of this kit it would have come with it.

Tigerman I was just thinking the same thing. Were am I going to put this monster.I have put the rail bed together and now I have to find a space to put a 7 foot model and case in my house. It will be just another problem to solve in time.

I will try to get some pictures of the progress as I go, andattempt to post them. This might sound easy to do but I am from the slide rule generation so useing a computer is something I am trying to learn.

I will try to keep you and others progress about the build and my idear about rebuiling some parts in the kit

It is HUGE!!

Besides the cost of model, add all the paint it will need, cement, pigments, etc.... That will take at least a year to complete.

Also you have to consider building a solid steel base, to move it aorund.

THere are so many things to consider.

Good luck!!

I did not think that this kit would spark so much interest but I am so glade to get so many people that can help with this build.

I can only hope that I can finish this in a years time, but I am more interested in the build itself and the enjoyment that I will have building it. I have looked at a lot of differant web site on building an correcting the mistakes in the kit. Qne of the things I am not going to do is cut the barrel down. I am going to rebuild the cat walks, hand rails, and a few other items I have seen done.

I have seen the type of skills that the members have and I know I can not compair to what they turn out, But given time I hope to turn out a great looking Dora railway gun.

I have the base close to being done I started on the braking system on thrail cars. I look at this as kits in them selfs. I think it will take about a mounth just to get tese built. not counting some of the extra like the missing storage boxes and putting on all the decale that I had to buy because they don't come with the kit.

As for the weight of the finish kit I have no idear, but the box it came in was 52 lbs. If you add up thebase, case to keep it in, and added extra added parts I wouldnot  guess at what it would come out to be

I know thar it will take a gallon of paint to paint this gun, and the cost of the kiy, and the decales, and misc items, but as they say the enjoyment is priceless. This is akit that one dreams of of building and it is to early to thik of were to put it and the space it will need.

I am looking forward to exchange idears and building this kit and the in put from some of you that have done this kit and what you may think.

I am working on the rail cars and I am starting to wonder what I have gotten myself in to. Saying that this kit is large is a under statment.

I am putting all this detail in to the rail cars and no one will ever see any of it. Someone said that it will take about a year to build, well I know that I have put about 24 hours in to the cars and have only two 80% done not even thinking obout paint or decale.

It will be along time frame in this build but I am loving ever minute of the build. It has alot of small parts and needs a lot of space to seperate them. I only wish you could see my living room when I pulled out all the parts on to the floor to look at them.

I will try to take some picture of this build and post them. I just have to learn how to do it. Any help with idears or building hints it greatly wanted to help me get it build.
