The only time I've seen ammo cans on pallets (not boxed on pallets) was several years ago at Fort Riley. They were being shipped to be sold for salvage. There were approximatly 100 cans per pallet of 50 cal and 150 cans per pallet of 30 cal and they were banded in place. Of course the cans were empty and there was about 200 pallets in that shipment.

.30 and .50 cal come in flimsy wood crates, four boxes of .30 and two boxes of .50 to a crate. Can't help with the others, never been on an ammo detail that involved them. The machine gun ammo is rarely stacked more than about chest high, say four feet. The crates are held on the pallets by flat steel bands.
