I never had a desire to do any JGSDF stuff until I went over there and did a winter time "Yama Sakura" exercise with them. When I got back, I was hooked. Like Rob said, the stuff sells for cheap online (I suspect in the home market it sells better), and I picked up the Type 90 and Type 74 MBTs for cheap, and a few Trumpeter items as well. Its definitely a niche market, like modern ROK or Chinese, compared to much of the AFV selection nowadays, but I like the stuff.

Wayne, Trumpeter makes a 6 wheel family of APC/NBC/C2 JGSDF vehicles, their tracked IFV (Type 89 I think), and has a SPG and SPAA in the works or recently issued, and Tamiya does that 4 wheel light LAV. There is actually a good selection of stuff out there for JGSDF now. Couple it with the modern Chinese stuff and you can do some nice Red Dawn Japan scenarios...

Yeah, the Type 90 always did remind me of the Leopard II, I guess with reason then. I think it's the shape of the turret on the Type 10 that makes me think of the LeClerc. Does seem to seem to be only two major design styles in MBTs now with the boxy NATO/Western types on one hand and the more low-slung rounded off Russian/Chinese designs on the other.

I've got a finished Type 90 with the ammo-loading set around somewhere. If I can find it I'll have to see about posting her. Turned out ok I think though nowhere nearly as nice as the one Hummingbird posted a month or so ago.

Well, considering that the Type 90 was basically a scaled down copy of the German Leopard 2 and the modern Western world's MBTs all are starting to look like one another, other country's tanks were probably investigated prior to development.

Modern Japanese tanks are always done well, but never seem to be great sellers. The Tamiya Type 90 and 4-wheeled LAV died on the shelves.

Heck, I got the special edition Type 90 with resin ammo loading crew for under $20 and the LAV for $10. Theyy just didn't sell well.
