Automobile Primer for Armor
Posted by Chrisk-k on Sunday, July 14, 2013 8:10 PM

My favorite Vallejo spray can primer seems out of stock everywhere in the US. I've read somewhere that some folks swear by "automobile primers" when painting their armor models.

If you've used automobile primers, please let me know the brand. I need black and grey.

I have used Krylon indoor/outdoor primer with good results. I have used red and grey colors. The red needed to be coated with dull coat to keep it from rubbing off though.

This is what I use whenever I DO use a primer.

If you have an a/b, try Vallejo Polyurethane Primer, good stuff, will take gentle wet sanding, but not major rough stuff.

Car-type Acrylic primers in rattle cans with Lacquer/Cellulose thinner have 'bite' & will stick where it's sprayed, esp. if unintentionaly oversprayed!

I have two AB's. But using spray cans for priming seems more convenient.

I agree.  The cheapo stuff works fine for plastic and resin.

I use halfords auto primer both regular and plastic. Both work fine and polish up well too.

I use Krylon gray and red oxide auto primer, works great. I've also started using Krylon "camo" colors, intended to hose your ranch truck or deer stand, but they cover great and dry without getting grainy.

The M50 I'm doing right now was primed with Krylon.
