Wether or Not
Posted by glock232 on Friday, February 20, 2004 10:25 AM
Hi everyone I have been building models for about 20 years now, im 28... so needless to day i just in the past several years started paying attention to details. I am pretty confident in my skills with following the box directions. However one area i lack in was wethering. I do mostly military pieces, ranging from WWII to modern, the kit im working on now is the M2A2 from Tamiya. It was simple put together, nothing realy was too dificult to finish, i completed it in about 7 or 8 hours. When i got done, I Airbrushed it with Tamiya's Flat Base Coat. This is the first model i have ever primed before painting, the old pieces i have done i just layed the paint right on, and they came out OK. This kit i want to do a good job on so im trying to do it the right way. Several questions i have are..
Whats the difference between a Lacquer, and Enamel. Can you put water based or water wash up paints on top of oil based paints. (Most of the paint i have now is Tamiya Enamel, but some of the other stuff i have is water wash up so im assuiming its water based).
Second big question is anyone got some tips on how to weather these thigns, i have tried thigns i read about in the past but none that i do seem to work the way they are susposed to look, one thing i tried was mixing India Ink with Rubbing Alcohol, apply it liberaly and the alcohol evaporates, and leave the black ink, which makes it look grimy. when i do it it seems to work, however the entire area i apply it over has a darker tint to it than the rest of the armor.
Im looking for any tips websites refrences online you can offer me. Im just not happy with the way's ive tried, howver since from the time i started modeling to today i have done it alone, never had anyone show me things, I tried to talk to someone who lived local to me but basicaly he blew me off so that was a dead end as well.
Also can anyone suggest a better way to tape off things when air brushing, i use low tac masking tape i got at the hobby store but every time i try to tape something off and spray it when i take the tape up It runs under every time, by then its too late to wipe it off, or if i can wipe it, i smudge what i wanted to paint....

HELPPPPP!!

Thanks in advance!!!

Welcome to FSM Joe and welcome to the Armour Forum.

There are many techniques to weather an armoured vehicle. All of which you will find in one shape or form on these pages.

Some of the things to search for would be washes, drybrushing and pastels.

If you use the search function, you'll turn up tons of info on each of these.

Enjoy the forums !!!
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert
