You can paint them either a black or a very dark grey.  They did accumulate dirt, snow, mud, etc.  The contact part you'll want to highlight with a metallic steel or with a #2 pencil where the track pad makes contact with the ground and the metal is exposed giving it a metallic sheen on that part.

best bet is an earth brown color with some highlights. Take a look at bulldozers on construction sites; the tracks tend to take on an earth color with some metallic highlights.

Hi;

I am just starting my second armor kit; the Tamiya Panzer IV H early version.  I am struggling to find what color to paint the black plastic tracks that come with the kit.  I am not experienced with armor at all, but I was not sure if the tracks were steel and covered with the camo scheme, or just a base color and left to accumulate the elements as they went?

This kit will not be any part of a diorama, just on a base as I am learning about armor modeling.

Thanks your information.

John
