Track Sag on JSU-152
Posted by MECHTECH on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 5:11 PM

Last night I happened upon a video on youtube of a JSU-152 being started up after being stored in field for many years. The video is not with English, so I could not tell what was being said.

But the big thing I did notice was how the tracks would really show a lot of sag while idling. When the beast started to move you could see sag either at the front while reversing or at the rear when moving forward. The title was in Slavic ,or Polish or RussianConfused, I don't know, but they loaded it on a trailer and unloaded it later.

That they were able to get it started and moving that quickly was pretty impressive as far as getting something like that moving againHmm. Pretty neat.

What I was watching at the time were videos on Construction Equipment, and that one popped up in the list for viewing on the side.

dead track (soviet) always sags more than live track. i don't know about other tanks but the M48/60 series had an adjustor to move the compensating idler (the big wheel at the opposite end from the sprocket) forward and backward to increase or decrease the track tension.

While building my 152 I found pictures where the tracks were sloppy lose and some where the tracks had a good bit of sag but not so much they that looked like they would come off.

The early model 152 had every other link guide horns and the tracks were prone to being thrown so they went to a guide horn on every link.

I split the difference because my crew wasn't as lazy as some and had just adjusted the tracks.Angel

The amount of sag is up to you but never tight that's a no no.
