New tecnique discovered possibly...

I think I may have found a new tecnique by complete accident today. ( Now I could have said I spent many hours locked in a room trying to perfect it Tongue [:P]

) I made a mixture of about 30 % Tamiya flat base and 70% Future to put a bit of a dull coat on the dragon wagon after putting on decals and such. I also sprayed some on the tires to get rid of the shine. After it dried I picked one up to put it on the DW and the coating cracked. After rolling it on around it cracked the rest of the way around the tire giving it this result:

Looked to me to give it a well worn tire look that I though looked kind of good. I'm going to see what happens with some pastels added to it next. Let me know what you think.

Same thing happened to my unimog when i sprayed gunze aqueous flat clear thinned with water. after it dried, i rubbed alcohol to remove it but it won't come off.
it looks like water beading.

Interesting LQ. Most people would curse and swear when this happened, but you have seen a benefit.

I have had flat base go like a film of white ice on a kit, but never seen it crack. It might have something to do with the thickness you sprayed it on......wonder if you can do it again though?

I hope the tires are not made out of the same styrene your DW is, or else your DW is going to look the same way, which in this case would not be good! Are the tires vinyl?

oh yea, the tires are rubber.I don't think I would have had the same reaction if the whole model looked like that!

Chris, that looks even better in the close up than the pic you showed me last night. That should be an easily repeatable technique. You just have to use a realatively (without drowning it of course) heavy coat of future on it. When I was in ROTC we would future the toes of our shoes or boots for the inspections at drill meets and stuff. God forbid if anyone stepped on your shoe though, it would shatter the future just like on your tire! Tongue [:P]

Good find and thanks for sharing. That can come in handy.

yeah I have that effect all the time when I'm applying a heavy wash. I only let it happen in a few areas to rough up the vehicle a bit, never thought about doing it on a tire though. interesting.....
