HobbyBoss 1/35 ZTD-05 AAAV
Posted by hummingbird on Saturday, October 19, 2013 12:17 AM

Well, here comes yet another finished kit from me. This time, I will be adding a kit most modeller won't touch usually. It's a rather peculiar looking vehicle as well. This is a ZTD-05 AAAV from hobbyboss, released in mid( I think ) 2012.

I painted this all in Gunze Sanyo, Mr. Colour Aqueous colours ; H313, H312 , H303 and H309. This is my first time I used Mr. Colour and I have to admit, I kinda like it. A little bit tricky to think but covers very good nevertheless. I went for the digital camo scheme as I don't really do that and now is the perfect chance to do one as I have the option to do so.

For weathering, I kept it rather clean apart from the various dried and wet sand. I did put on a fair amount of chippings on the front and rear plates and along the side skirts. I thought those areas would be chipped more then the rest of the vehicle with the vehicles coming out of the assault ships and going through the shore lines where reefs or rocks on the shallow sea bed or beach might chip away the paint. I'm kinda not happy with the sand effect. It was my first time doing this and it was very hard for me to make clumps of wet sand. The pigments are from MIG and they change colour quite drastically when fixed with thinner. Oh well.. I will just take it as a valuable lesson for my next amphibious projects. The wet effects were done with Tamiya Clear Gloss and Vallejo Clear Varnish. I was broke and couldn't afford dedicated wet effect fluids so I just had to resort to the gloss paints. They actually work pretty well.

Here's some photos -

To be honest, I am not particularly fond of my own paint job on this. This is a bit of self-criticism from me: I was very impatient and some of the pattern are crooked. I had a hard time cutting the bloody masks out ...... GRRRRRR, the horror...

Well, that's about as much I can sum up about the build. More informations and more photos can be found on my blog -

Nice build BUT please some nice "basic" shots that don't bend the head would be good to properly appreciate the build would be great.

Nice build BUT please some nice "basic" shots that don't bend the head would be good to properly appreciate the build would be great.

First of all sir, That's the whole reason why the link to my blog is there.

2nd - the admin of modelarmour.com said the same thing to me once and I replied like so -

'' well, these photos will always stay with me for my entire life so I played around with what made me happy. Its boring and no fun just to shoot normally.

If I don't enjoy a good time with my models ( from building all the way to photo/photo effects), what's the point of building them in the first place???

Regards,
Gary  ''

IF you had just clicked the link which directed to my blog ( which I doubt you did ) you would see that I showed a walk-around view from all sides, close-ups of the weatherings and effects and I did and then, the final posing photos. I have been building in such a way since I started and I have no intention to change.

I do apologize in advance if my response seem aggressive and snappy but to uphold the ideal of my individuality, my style, my personal preferences and for all the great things about creativity this hobby stands for, I have decided to response like so.

I, however, thank you greatly for checking out my work and leaving a nice comment about the '' model ''.

Have a nice weekend and happy MODELLING....

Actually no I didn't check out the link to your blog for the main reason that after trying to checkout your first couple of images my eyes hurt, I gave cursory viewing of the others and by that time I had a hard time reading the final part of your post glossed over it and didn't see the link, so the jokes on you mate.

"If I don't enjoy a good time with my models ( from building all the way to photo/photo effects), what's the point of building them in the first place??? " Personally I feel the same way but if I'm not the first to comment on this maybe you need to take an objective look the situation and not be so defensive of it?

I'm all for providing arty images of my work (I've done so in the past) but I also understand that if I'm after comments and critique I should provide suitable images WITHOUT forcing people to go looking for them (because I know a greater percentage of people wont go for some reason or maybe wont see the link).

Hummingbird: I think she looks great! I applaud you for having the guts to take the plunge and try digital camo, considering the work involved I wouldn't worry about some not being perfectly straight. I'm not sure how the Chinese applied it but some probably weren't perfect on the real thing either. Someday I'll work up the courage to try digital camo... someday...

And I think the mud and water splattered on the lower hull came out great, I'm going to try something similar as well.

Didn't have time here at work to read though your build log, just skimmed over it. I'll check it out in more detail when I get home.

Only thing that sticks out to me is those empty storage bins. Don't know where you can buy PLA equipment but she'd look better with something tossed in there! Sorry- just nit-picking!

Hi, I think it looks good, however, embarking to a journey for a digital camo, requires a  LOT of patience and TIME, I think, as yourselve mentioned, you became impatience, so I sense you just wanted to finish and move on.

On the photos perspective I will not criticize if they look bad or good, but I can advice that if you want to enjoy your hobby just for you, then, done publish them. You have to be aware that uploading anything to the web, becomes a matter of criticism, good or bad and basically live throgh it.

If you liked your models and photos, then, whats the problem?

Always, be open to criticism in a mature way, it will help you improve you skills.

But that's just me.

Cheers.

i will read your blog later as i have a bunch of PLA stuff and want to try a digital camo. the weathering turned out nice. as to the empty bussle, it depends. if it is going in any contest with a separate OOB category, adding stuff to the bussle kicks it out of there. most local and, i suspect, small regionals don't have a separate category so it's your call. it's easy enough to add a large folded tarp and a rolled or folded camo net. both will fill it up.

as long as there are some good clear shots of the build, i don't mind one or two "artsy" ones.  i will do that too especially a ground eye view.
