Opinions on Hobby Boss 1/48 vehicles
Posted by JayF on Thursday, February 13, 2014 9:04 AM

Hello

At my LHS there are some Hobby Boss 1/48 tanks (many variations of the Sherman, T-34 and KV-1) at very cool prices, and I was wondering if they are worth getting.

I know Tamiya is also making 1/48 vehicles, so how the two compares ? Because the Tamiya kits are much more expensive. Are they fun to make ?

And on a side note, I’m wondering why 1/48 vehicles are not very popular right now, as I don’t see many companies making kits at the moment.

Strange, because 1/48 aircrafts are extremely popular.

The Hobby Boss kits are great. Quarter scale experts at first slammed the Sherman series but have softened their stance. Their main issues were with the shape of the Sherman hull, but realized their complaining torpedoed the line. Other than the hull shape "issues" the Sherman kits are great little models.

The T-34 and KV series are 1/16th Trumpeter kits shrunk down. They are superb model kits.

Tamiya's kits are easier to assemble, but early kits have diecast metal hulls. The detail is sharp, but not as fine as the Hobby Boss kits. Hobby Boss kits went for around $15-20, whereas Tamiya kits were in $30 range.

Tamiya kits were marginally less than comparable 1/35 scale kits, so other than the space reduction, there was no benefit to switching from 1/35 to 1/48 scale.

Airfix began releasing modern UK vehicles in 1/48 recently. Hopefully it will rekindle the 1/48 scale armor market.

The difference between scales in different equipment is related to the size, cost of materials packaging and finally end user experience.

In real life a B57 bomber is 10 times bigger than a tank, so imagine having an airplane kit 1/35, it wold be very impractical to build, costs, adn so on.

Also, 1/35 has become pretty much a standard in the hobby, so you find all kind ot figures, PE, kits, decals, etc. based on 1/35. It would be very difficult to create different kits for differente sizes where they already have to develop for different companies.

At least thats what I think...

Couldn't agree more!  The T-34, when I got it, was a delightful surprise.  For the price, which was stunningly cheap, I got great detail, and full interior including engine and fighting compartment.  I have contemplated buying a couple more just to have for the stash!

You are right, and for 20$ it's almost a steal.

Just look at the reviews over at PMMS : http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/48/hobbyboss/hobbyboss.htm

The problem is I can't decide if I want to get the KV-1 or the T-34 ...  Stick out tongue

I know the KV-1 doesn't have any interior, and I already have a 1/35 kit for this tank in my stash.

thanks all for your answers !
