Hobby Lobby Find
Posted by USMC6094 on Sunday, March 2, 2014 10:20 AM

I dont get to Hobby Lobby very often, for a few reasons, but I swung through the Morehead City store yesterday and found something surprising.

Now I might be a little behind the current trend, I mix my own washes and havent tried anything more advanced than the Tamiya weathering powders for future use.

Yesterday I came across a Valejo weatherinf set for olive drab painted vehicles and bought it more out of curiousity than anyhing else as I've never used this brand of paints for anything, as a matter of fact I've only used acrylic paint twice on in the entire time I've done models.

Anyway, I thought I would post since this set seemed pretty cool and might pay off when I use it later on.

Yes, Hobby Lobby has been adding things like the Vallejo and Tamiya stuff to their inventory. Kinda nice to get something like that which you are interested in trying out for 40% off.

Tamiya has 4 different sets of weathering "stuff" each consisting of 3 related colors in a nice little plastic box, along with an applicator.  Even comes with an instruction sheet in English.. trouble is, it doesn't work.  I could get no powder to transfer from the cakes of "stuff" onto the applicator, nor could I get any of it to stick to the model, even breaking it up and using a fine brush.  It is said to be semi-wet, but this was bone dry.

Do you think maybe I got two old sets that were dried out?  It looks fine, but it sure doesn't work.  Got this at Hobby Lobby.  Maybe it was sitting around in a hot warehouse for years.

Anyhow, be careful about buying this stuff.  The package is only taped shut, so you could open it in the store and rub one of the cakes and see if anything comes off on your finger.  If not, seal it back up and leave it there!

Doc O'Brien's weathering powder, sold by Micro Mark, works great, however.  I have a set over 10 years old and I used it yesterday.  The 12 little jars will last forever.

http://www.scarletuser.com/images/smilies/violin.gif Here where I live, Hobby Lobby is still carrying the same tired old inventory as six or seven years ago.....

....before that, they carried some much nicer stuff.

                      now is the oil paint.

USMC6094, while on a trip to Hobby Lobby with my wife. I walked around and found the same thing. I had to get it as I seem to see it used by a lot of modelers. I am also anxious to see how it works for me.

Chuck, it does indeed sound like you got a dried out pair of them. I have been using mine for a few years, and while the have dried out a bit, I am still able to make them work just fine...

Stik, I believe you are right.  Of course, I threw out the receipts before trying the product….Doh!

I picked up the AK Interactive colour modulation set for US olive drab AFVs a year or so ago and love it. I guess it would be cheaper just to mix your own paint but it's so simple with it pre-mixed- just add a few drops of paint to colour cup and add the next filter.

I bought the Russian/Soviet set last week but haven't had a chance to try it yet.

If the Vallejo set is the same concept I think you'll really enjoy them.

Yes I have seen those sets at the two HL I have in my area but I'm very happy with the MMP Powders I have. They stick very well and produce excellent results. I just recently got a couple of jars of a weathering powder labeled under DOA from some chaps across the pond and is equally excellent in quality.

I have two sets of pigments that I havent gotten to use yet, I cant remember who made them, I'll look when I get home, but the name escapes me at this point. I do most of my weathering with artists watercolors, but all this new tech stuff might change that lol
