OT computer game question on Tank combat
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, February 26, 2004 11:09 PM
Guys, what is the best present tank combat computer simulator? A shooter game, rather than a Steel Panthers type game. It should have a good mix between playability and realism -- not too onerous to learn and control, but not too arcade gamey.

Am I asking too much? Or is there some great game out there? WWII preferably, but Gulf War is ok too. Thanks.

ooh.. There isn't much. Steel Beasts goes for realism, but for less than real, try Armoured fist 3.

try battlefield1942 and d/l the forgotten hope mod. it's more realisic than the original game. be careful tho, some anti-tanker WILL take you out. i kinda preferr desert combat mod. the did a VERY nice job on the M1A1 and AH64A

there isnt many out but Operation flashpoint is a great one, its more of a war simulation than just a Tank sim.
its a bit old now but theres loads of add ons out for it, and loads of sites where you can download Mods for it like Vietnam, the Gulf or WW2
heres the main site http://www.codemasters.com/flashpoint/front.htm
http://www.codemasters.com/redirect/redirect.php?url=/flashpoint/recon/download-front.htm
the Armour

you can drive or fly anything in the game

I completly forgot about Op. Flashpoint! Really groundbreaking game! Had lots of fun with the mission editor, but never could get the event scripting to quite work.

Any of the Combat Mission games seem to be pretty good.... as does Panzer Commander...although it is a bit dated....but I have it and enjoy it from time to time....

Flashpoint would be my pick. Unfortunately, there aren't too many games out there that deal with this. I just got a new machine, and was looking for something too. Didn't find anything. Got a lot of FPS games (Call of Duty is a blast) and Secret Weapons over Normandy. Nothing new dealing with armour tho...

Operation flashpoint or battlefield1942, you'll have a blast with either of them.

So far Operation Flashpoint seems to have been the one most positively recommended. Do you need a joystick to game with it or is it easy enough to game with the mouse and keyboard? I used to have a joystick in my gaming days, but that was several PC's ago.

Operation Flashpoint, keyboard and mouse are just fine.

battlefield1942, keyboard and mouse are fine, but if you get the desert combat mod, I would suggest a joystick, since it is near impossible to fly the helicopters without one. A joystick will also help with all the other WWII & modern planes.

If I were you, I would download the demo for each and try them out, you just might end up loving both.

PlayStation's Panzer Front, Panzer Front bis and the soon-to-be-released (for PS2) Panzer Front Ausf B are excellent tank battle sim games.

One word, AMAZING... battlefield 1942 also has two expansion packs available (Road to Rome, Secret Weapons). Add to that the wide range of excellent free mods for WW2 and moderen warefare (http://www.desertcombat.com/)

Check out http://www.bf42.com/index.php , it will give you all the information about all the mods, plus tips for everything you could possible wish for in ground, air and sea combat. I've been playing this game now for about 18 months, there's really nothing that comes close to it for team combat in a WWII or modern warfare setting.

My wife just bought me Battlefield 1942 and from what I have played it is great. Allthough I need to get a better graphics card tor eally enjoy it. The tnak driving is great and alot of fun. Allthough I have yet to fly in it without crashing so I think I'll just stick to the ground stuff.

lol Michaelvk sounds good to me :)

hey lizardqing2, what video card do you have now? I'm playing COD with a radeon 9200. It's decent but not that great. Getting a nice 9800 pro soon, so maybe that's when I'll get into bf1942 :)
maybe after all these group builds i'm in, it'd b fun for someone to create a themed group build, something like vehicles from a particular game, or movie, or something like that :)

Which fruil or mk tracks to use for marder 3?
Posted by spector822002 on Friday, February 27, 2004 3:57 PM
[bLizardqing[/b] Ge force makes a number of excellent 128 meg video cards around $100 bucks also some 64's around the 50 dollar range ( would recommend the 128 personally). I would never spend 300 bucks on any vid card as my geforce has handles the most complex games with ease ,.... the only time I had a lag was during the final battle of blitzkrieg when there were literally hundreds of tanks and men on the field at one time , and then it was only a slight lag ! Them radeons are nice, but man are they pricey for what you get ! When I get cable hookup you can count me in on the gaming , its way too much fun playing on teams ! ( and addictive)

WWII online isnt a bad game but the big drawback is that the graphics arent that great, and there is a monthly fee of 12.99. You can choose a lot of different armor that was in WWII. You start out as a private in the Army and you have to do missions to gain rank, the higher rank you have the more choices for vehicles there are. You can check their website at www.wwiionline.com you can download the game right from their site, and i think there is a free trial period as well. Also you can play German, Brittish, and French forces, Army (infantry and armor), Airforce, and Navy. Again, you start out as a private and the more you complete your missions you get points, and can gain rank, to get better vehicles. And if you download it you can play the "traning" part of if which gives you access to I think all of the vehicles, so you can pratice. With that said, I give it about a 9 for strategy 6 on graphics, 9 for realism, and 7 for playability.

I am running the integrated graphics that came with the machine I just got last week. Been looking at those 128 mb geforce that are around $100 though. i can set it to the low settings rigth now and it runs smooth as can be. I figure with a good card high settings should eb a breeze with the set up of the rest of the computer. I think a getting a group of us would be great , have not tried playing it online yet though.

Its great fun online.. As long as you've got clear defined roles in the team. Otherwise its shocking. A well organized team that has members who don't mind sitting in a base to defend it while the battle goes on elsewhere can be very hard to beat. Also people who stick to their vehicles or pedestrian status. Or at least per game. The game, (for the peeps who don't know) switches through the different battlefields. So what I think is fair is that each battlefield everyone shifts up a spot, so to speak. Each round somebody else is the leader, tank commander, pilot etc. etc.

How about we come up with a name, and I'll cobble a site together?

My idea's for the name:
- 11th scale division
(11 being the exacto favorite)
- Plastic army guys
- Scale Model Army
(Derivative of New Model Army)

Who's next?

How hard is it to play online with dial up. I used to play army men 2 alot online and the lag sometimes would be to much to bear. I can imagine how it could get with one that has this much going on. Love the game though. Just have really played the last couple of nights and I'm hooked. Just spent over an hour on the Battle of the Buldge and did'nt even know it. How about 1/35th Armored Division.

1/35 armoured sounds great.. But there are also wingy thinggies too..

I also have a dial-up (more to the point: tin-can and string) connection, and on a small server its fine.

Who does play Desert Combat or bf1942? I think we should form our own club sort of thing. What are your user names for the game? Mine is Captain Mike. See ya on the field.
