OK MD, I will add you to the roster on the thread in the GB forum. Let me know over there what your kit choice is whenever. We still have a couple months before this even kicks off.

A bit of related "Today in history": The Battle of Dien Bien Phu ends in a French defeat and a Vietnamese victory (the battle began on March 13).

Hmmmmmm...........I should probably participate in this one, as both my uncles were there with the USAF & US Army.  It does trouble me that you're not including my adopted countrymen from France - there were Americans at Dien Bien Phu, after all.

Anyways, I'll have to check the stash and get back to you....so many GBs, so lil time.

I am ony drawing a line for time, not nationalities. I am all too aware of  the men before the years that I am choosing. Not an easy choice. And I am not ruling out the opening phase, flat out...

I hear ya Brian I will most certainly post a lot of photos when I get back. Judging by the size of AWM I may have to extend my trip.

Well, if Doog can go to a Russian tank museum and posts a lot of photos from the visit I expect to see a nice collection of photos from your visit to the AWM when you get around to it! Big Smile

I might have a look myself at that. I intend on going to Canberra to have a look at the AWM have been meaning to for a long time. I have a trip lined up next year and will make it part of the trip and to also visit my relatives remembered in the wall of fallen heroes. I am looking forward to it and hopefully take some pics of the various vehicles and aircraft there.

That's funny Raven because remembering the book's author was a curator at the Australian War Memorial I decided to head over to the site just now to browse through their book's for sale and one of the one's I was looking at that seems interesting is a book by Adam Claasen called Dogfght: The Battle of Britain and chronicles the Australian and New Zealand pilots who fought in that particular event in history!

So true Stikpusher. We will always be there when our allies need us.

Brian that sounds like a great book. My dad served in the R A F and was a mechanic on mosquitos in NSW so have a large interest in military things.

It's my pleasure Raven!  Several years ago there was a member here from Australia who was quite a wealth of Digger and ANZAC info that helped my interests along by suggesting some great reading material.  One book in particular will be quite helpful.  Mud And Dust by Michael K Cecil.  It is a wonderfully done history of Australian army vehicles and artillery in Vietnam.  I bought it back when it came out (2009 I think) and had to have it shipped directly from Australia.  But it was worth it!

Thanks Brian for thinking of us Aussies and representing them in this group build, we are only a small country but a formidable one. The Centurion is a great piece of armor. Looking forward to seeing it in progress.

Ok, NH, I will add you to the roster. That is a gem of a kit so I certainly look forward to it being built here! I love the ANZAC angle as well. Many people think of only US and Vietnamese being the combatants when like Korea, there were many other players as well. All deserve respect.

Hmmmmm...... well Carlos, in general I don't do group builds, not because I have anything against them or that I don't like them.  Mostly it is because I build at a snails pace, can have a tough time finding bench time at certain periods of the year, and it does not help I am so scatter brain I jump between kits mid-build.  So making deadlines, even if given a year, had proven to be a problem in the past couple group builds I participated in.

.....however

I have had a special kit sitting in my stash for a few years now just waiting for the right time to build.  This may be it.  Perhaps this is just the right time and the right place.  So sign me up.  The kit I have had waiting to build is the AFV club 1/35 Royal Australian Armored Corps MK 5/1 Centurion, Vietnam version.   The Aussies and Kiwis have always fascinated me, and I bet not too many people would know that the Anzacs participated in "America's war".  I always intended this kit to be sort of a tribute.

I may also do a bonus build too....thinking along the lines of a figure since it has been a while since I have painted one and the urge is building.  But not 100% sure on that at the moment since I need to browse around and see if I find anything that catches my fancy.  So for now it will be the Centurion at the least, but possibly more.

Posted by stikpusher on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 12:01 PM

Today, on the 39th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon, and the end of that war, I am putting out the feeler announcement for a Vietnam War GB on here. It will kick off August 4th 2014 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Tonkin Gulf Incident, and run until April 30th 2015, the 40th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. This GB will be open to any and all subjects that participated in the Vietnam War, post 1957, land, sea, or air, any scale, any medium.
