I saw it with my own eyes! (Tamiya 1/16 Leo 2A6)

Howdy, folks!Smile [:)]
Tamiya World here in Osaka was displaying Tamiya's new stuff over the weekend, so I popped in for a peek.
The main piece being displayed was the big R/C 1/16 Leopard 2A6 that had been recently announced.

It's pretty darned cool! Excellent detail, and all the R/C and sound gimmicks are very realistic.

This kit will definitely please:
Leopard 2A6 fans.
Big R/C tank fans.

I'm neither, unfortunately, but it's still an amazing model.

The Tamiya boys wouldn't tell me a price, but did say it should be on sale this May.

I'm actually looking forward to this kit, I'm thinking (from what I have seen of the pre-order price), that the kit will initially be offered at around the 1300 US mark, later falling to about 800 US.

Were you able to get any shots?

Thanks for the info J-Hulk.

It won't be cheap, that's for sure!!

Didn't bring a camera, but you can see pix on Tamiya's website.
One thing I did notice about the particular model on display: it's been rode hard! Many pieces broken or broken off, with lots of nicks and scratches. I'm sure as a demo model they've been pushing it to the limits.

The turret is massive...like a shoebox!

Yup!
And affordable! Only 2,700 yen (about $25.50 US). Beautiful box art, too.
Too bad I just don't like that tank...can't figure out why, either.
Maybe it's that ridiculous wedge-shaped armor on the turret...I dunno.
Great tank, for sure.

Heck, I'd rather have a 1/16 RC Osorio! Or an Ariete...but what I'd REALLY like is a 1/16 Japanese Type 74 MBT!!

Hey J-Hulk, you're our inside guy in Japan! Too bad the latest 1/16 tank ain't German. Guess it will be a while til they put out a Panther...

Hey, ya'll need to check out Backyardarmor.com and their suspension upgrades for the Tiger I and King Tiger. Pretty nice looking stuff.

I can't wait for the 2A6, for some reason, I like the the Leopard 2 when I view it sideways. But I must say it does look kinda' awkward sometimesSmile [:)]

Yeah Beans, something just ain't right with that turret...it's just about as long as the chassis!

Okieboy! The latest 1/16 tank IS German! Leopard 2A6! Modern German, yes...but German nonetheless.

Thanks for the Backyard Armor heads up.
I want the Korean War Easy Eight conversion for the big Sherman!

Yeah the turret of the 2A6 somehow looks WAAAAAAY out of proportion to the rest of the tank. I liked the 2A5.
Thanks for the info J-Hulk. Not really into paying that much for a kit though. I'd eventually like to build something in a large-scale RC. Maybe the pershing..

Nope, not a typo, that's the price that several German Hobby shops are selling as the pre-order price, I would expect that to fall to about $800 USD when production ramps up.

I was watching a discovery channel program on tank armor, his was an eye opener, but the reason the angles are so great is that it effectivly increses the armour thinkness quite markedly. i persoinally would love an r/c tank, but in New Zealand i can't afford one (around $2000.00 full kit) :(

Being a German Panzer fan, regardless of WWII or present day, that 1/16 Leo is great. There's a company called "Hobbyco" that has a 1/16 RC Abrams, which, for under $100, has sounds, turret traverse, gun elevation, etc ... -- I've almost bought it, but since I cannot stand the Abrams, I had hoped that Hobbyco had a Leo in there productline, but they don't ... :(

So this 1/16 Leo by Tamiya is certainly an item to watch...!

Or an IS-II, KV-I or a T-72. Even a redo of the Sherman -- their big Sherman is a revamp of a pretty old kit, if I remember correctly.

I'm glad they are doing another combat veteran -- the C2 -- in 35th. The Leo hasn't seen any combat and isn't likely to. I'll bet the C2 will be a great model. Accurate Armour must be upset! They just released a TELIC C2.

Derek,
you will never get anywhere in this hobby if you are going to take that approach!!
'justify that expense' indeed!!

they should forget about all the silly modern German armour and just do a 1/16 Abrams, Challenger 1 and 2 and some T72s each box should come with a bag of sand

Since I love the Leopard II, here's a picture of one in "action" under the KFOR forces in Kosovo, and below the 1/35 Tamiya A5 I based on that picture:

Here are the rest of the pics of my Leo:
