Any NKL-26 Aerosani references?
Posted by CrashTestDummy on Friday, September 12, 2014 4:26 PM

I'm slowly-starting assembling the Trumpeter NKL-26 Aerosan.  The kit has a lot of nice detail, but then just leaves other stuff off.  While I'm sure it'll probably go mostly unnoticed, I'd like to add some details in the interior.

The kit instructions indicate to paint the interior khaki, so I faithfully did that.  While looking around to see if I could find any interior pictures which would tell me how all the linkage is connected, I discovered that the thing was built mostly out of plywood.  So, I'll be trying to add some wood grain to that interior (and probably the exterior, too, so I can 'wear off' some of the white top coat). I saw where one builder used the hair spray technique to wear away the white, displaying the wooden paneling underneath, so I might try that.  Do you think these things were sprayed white, or brush painted?  Being Soviet, I'd think having visible brush strokes in the white wouldn't be out of the ordinary, especially on these things.

Inside, there appear to be some linkage, and/or brackets that connect the steering to the ski mechanisms.  I'd like to add the proper detail, whether it's wire for pulleys, or rod for links, but am not finding much out there.

Does anyone know if there's any interior shots of these little things anywhere?  Thanks.

Gene,

The only reference I am aware of is the Tankograd book:

I don't think it had much in the way of interior photos though.  An intriguing line of vehicles indeed!

I guess I'll 'wing' it, then.  There's not much that will be visible, anyway.  Thanks.

There appears to be not that many pictures of these things online, hence repeats of fairly-common pictures.  There were a few real jewels there, though, that's given me a lot of good ideas.  Thank you very much!

This one is pretty good:

^^Even when using Rich Text option this thing won't let me format a link, but it's the last one in your list Shawn.

It's a couple of what look like 1/35 scale copies of the NKL-26.  One painted, and one 'in the raw'.  The one unpainted version has a side off, letting you see some of the detail inside, which includes a bracket used to protect the throttle and steering linkage from getting anything tangled up in it.  I think I'll add this, it'll hide detail that's missing and not well-detailed, so I don't have to do a lot more scratching.  It should be very easy to do with a piece of styrene sheet.

Very nice work!  I'm slowly coming along.  I just about have the engine assembled, and have started on the skis.

Thanks, Vladimir!  I wonder how much of that interior is modeled from the real thing?  Still, it does add some detail.  I may use some of it.  I'm trying my hand at putting a wood-grain effect on the walls of the thing.  The plan is to overshoot it white, and rub some white off to reveal the 'wood' underneath.  We'll see how that works.  I bet the back side was just about all black with oil and soot from the engine, quite like the kit is done in the link above.
