Your going to need a bigger shelf…..I think the Unimog is one great build.

yes i am really happy with that one. so much i bought another one in 1/35. i actually printed out DOOG's comments on it which started out with WOW!. he is the one who got me into doing oil washes and filters.

There's an idea for a base. Godzilla was this tank's primary adversary.

and now i am outed.

took a t-rex footprint and did the arithmetic to get the 3 toed size for my base. i am using the original Godzilla height of 100 feet. as Tokyo skyscrapers got taller so did Godzilla so as to tower over them. he is much taller and fatter today.

TYPE 61 still needs some fix up BUT my airfix MK-1 FEMALE took a surprise 1st in 1/72 tanks at contest today. and my UN UNIMOG took another 1st in commercial trucks..

hey terry. thanks. i do like this one and have a bunch more in the stash.

my M-1117, it's posted recently here, didn't paint out as well as ii wanted and i was feeling a bit bummed so i posted it any for suggestions and a little pat on the back. i got some good suggestions, as always, and tried them out and it improved quite a bit. looking at it a week later  it looks pretty good. and i was about as subtle as Godzilla.

working on the base for this for a contest on Saturday.

Wayne by no means is this nit picking but for a showing I would do some very minor things like paint up the tools, spot some soot or a rust tone on the exhaust tips, some wear marks on cleats hinges etc. You may have done them but the pics are blurry. I think once I give the vehicle a good look, its the small details that put it above another entry. I really do like the camo pattern and the dusting really works. I can't tell much from the pics but is there any dusting on the wheels, bogies and tracks? Wayne I don't do shows because I do this for enjoyment but I've seen how they're judged and if I had an entry I'd go all in for every detail especially in 1/72. Thats whats really cool about these small guys especially if you finish them off like a 1/35. Does this make sense or am I just babbling. Anyway have fun and enjoy the show. Good luck.

first i agree the pics aren't the best and i will post better ones when i finish the base.

nit pick away. we learn by observing and listening. as i am new to 1/72 all comments are welcome.

modern armor weathering is different from ww2 armor weathering. in western armies, including the JGSDF, vehicles are well maintained so there is almost no damage or rust, even on the tools. most of the rust on my tanks in germany was on the end connectors from sitting in the motor pool in winter for a month. one 30 minute road march took care of that.

the paint is much better so there isn't a lot of chipping. some exhaust staining could be there if the air cleaner filters weren't cleaned regularly but the new metals eliminate rust. i misted the entire tank with a light coating of soft dirt including the running gear but i really didn't want to overdo it and hide the camo, which did turn out great.  i have to paint the lights and next build i will fill in the vision blocks.

my thinking on detail painting is that one has to be careful when taking it to the same level of detail in 1/72 i would do in 1/35. the smaller scale may cause multiple colors to look garish, even if they are realistic. but that could be my artistic thinking and i will let that override accuracy many times.

i enjoy contests because it gives me a deadline.. in fact i just finished a base for an 88 for the contest on saturday. i like the competition but don't take it the results seriously though it is fun to win.

guess i best head for bed.

Good clean build and paint. Now to start installing full interiors to these gems…. JK Wink

I too have just gotten into this scale. There are interesting subjects OOB in this scale that are not available in 1/35 IM Styrene.

Wayne I'm with you, Braille scale is really appealing especially the new Dragon kits. They're cheaper, lots of detail and don't take up a lot of shelf space, all winners. Nice work, and BTW whose whining? I always like your camo jobs. Terry

JGSDF TYPE 61
Posted by waynec on Friday, October 10, 2014 10:43 AM

first off no more whining.. the M-1117 is looking better each time i look at it.

the trumpeter JGSDF TYPE 61 is done. HMG isn't mounted until i make a base.

this is my first tracked 1/72 so i learned some things i didn't have to worry about with BTR-80. lessons learned:

1. brass rod axles for idlers and drive sprockets when using rubber band track,

2. leave the fiddly parts off until lower hull is painted, tracks are on and upper hull is attached. TAMIYA paints, black oil pin wash,  and REAL DEAL soft dirt misted on. still need to build a base and have researched the size i need  for the footprint. the base may throw it into another category.

i am really getting into this scale which is scary given the 150 1/35 kits in the stash. i'll post better pics when the base is done. picked up 2 more, a CHALLENGER and a HORNISSE at club auction and i see AOSHIMA is doing a JGSDF PATRIOT, TANK TRANSPORTER WITH TYPE 74, and AMERICAN ATOMIC CANNON.
