M48 or M48 A1 in 1/35?
Posted by GMorrison on Monday, March 16, 2015 2:54 PM

Why can't I find a kit for the early M 48?

Any help appreciated.

I'll be surprised if we don't see one from Dragon in the near future. They have to be aware if the potential market for one, and most of the tooling is already done....

I'm also not so patiently waiting for one, and a good M8 dozer kit for the M48 series.

Dragon has announced an early M48 in their Black Label series. Not sure if the M48 or A1 off the top of my head...

M48A1... you need a M48 with the earlier cupola for that Jordanian Patton. Unless perhaps you swipe one off an Italeri M47...

Now see! I didn't see the earlier thread. There must be a way to back date that cupola without buying a second kit.

Oh and of course I need the A1 first.

Thank you very much, Stikko.

EDIT: it looks like "Slingshot Productions" sold one as recently as 2012.

One of the Korean resin companies did a backdate kit several years back for the Tamiya A3 kit. But it was 1) pricery, and 2) had all the parts needed for a backdate including the engine deck and rear plate, that you would not need here. A cupola is all you need pretty much, but I suspect that once this kit is issued, somebody will come out with a conversion kit.

Like I said, you could likely use an M47 cupola, or cast one off that I am pretty sure...

The Slingshot site has enough three views of their resin that I could fake one up. Plus maybe Hussein sitting on the rim hides something. I went to Jordan in 2010 and really enjoyed the trip. I had a pic a couple of years back here that I know you saw, of an F-104 Gate Guard.

I believe that there were eight on their way to Jordan in early 1967, impounded in Turkey until after the war.

It almost looks like a M113 type cupola with that .50 mount...

That looks like an Urdan cupola that the Israelis put on their M48s and M60s, but with a .50 mount.

It's so close to the Urdan cupola that they're virtually the same, with the exception of the MG mount, which as has been mentioned, could be robbed from an M113......

I'm pretty sure there's some actual common design history between the Urdan and M48A-nothing cupolas.

Ok so I've found the part. Is it right for the Jordanian Patton? I am thinking it is.

Well, only some early M48 expert would know... I know that Rob served on M48s but he was on the final A5 version.

Yes, the early, Urdan-style cupola by Slingshot models (below) is correct for a straight M48 (A nothing) tank.

Based on the above posted pics of a Jordanian M48s, it is the correct cupola as well.

The M47 copula and the M113 copula will not work, as they are very different from the copula found on the M48 and M48A1. The M48 copula was almost identical to the Urdan, just with the external mount for the M2. Ironically the US later developed the mini turret, and the Israelis favored the low profile of the early style turret so much that they backwards engineered their own  (the Urdan we all know), further more when the US M48s got their A5 upgrade they opted for the removal of the mini turret for the Urdan which is going full circle.

The kit above is a perfect fit, In addition I think Legends is the company who sells the M48 back date set for the Tamiya / academy M40 kits.

Geez about a books worth of information there. Thank you, Rob.

So, is the Dragon kit a reality? Are they honest in their projections?

I noticed in the Armorama thread that someone suggested the "tension idler" was missing from the CAD drawing of the M 48 A1.

I don't know about the A1, but the photo and drawing above dont have it either.

Yes, the classic M48 kit! I have built a few of those over the years. But I want both of the new tooled RoG M48 kits. And of course the Dragon kit whenever it is released.

Yes exactly! I even went and watched GI Blues again.

Thanks, Stik...

Also thanks to the Don, I have a great deal of good info on building those Universal Fuel Jettison racks. But I'm not going to start until this kit arrives.

BTW I already have plans for two...

Hey so a mysterious Paypal charge showed upon my account the other day. I figured it might be one of those "Hmm what did I order last night?" deals.

Today I got an email from Tower Hobbies that my Dragon M48A1 had shipped!!!

Yippee!

Good deal.  You'll have to do a mini-review here when you get it.  I may have to get one as I hear it should be nice.

I'd like to see that mini-review too GM.

It's listed as being in stock at Sprue Brothers now too:
