Silly Putty in the UK
Posted by Daveash on Sunday, March 7, 2004 5:41 PM
I have read that Silly Putty is ideal for masking camo paterns but I don`t know if it is available in the UK. We have products like "Plasticene and Play-Doh". Are these similar to Silly Putty. My main concern is that the product should not leave a greasy residue when removed.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums Daveash

Toys r us sell some Krazy Putty (i think thats what its called) i dont know if its the same
plastacene and play doh are different stuff we were chating about this in the Panther group build
the thing with silly putty is that if you can make it into a ball, it can bounce (like a bouncing ball) and still be manipulated into shapes, and it comes in a egg (ive seen it in the UK but i cant remember where, you could try Joke shops?
good luck on your search

Daveash hi, and welcome to the forums!
Sign - Welcome [#welcome]
as caveman said, this was mentioned in a group build a while back, and i think nothing really came of it. some guys said they could send some from the US, and i tried contacting the makers of SP and was told they don't have outlets over here.Disapprove [V]
now that doesn't mean it can't be found though...

djmodels1999 have you used blu-tack before? how does react to paint be fired all over it?

regards,
nick
Kind regards, Nicholas

Nick, I used it on my Kingtiger. It will work fine as long as you do not have too much fine delicate added details because it will pull them out! I airbrushed enamels over it and although it's not re-usable (well, I would not re-use it), it did not react at all and worked perfectly as a masking aid.

However, I might add that if you add pure white spirit of bluetack it becomes soggy and stringy. I suppose that with the airbrush, the thinner does not have the time to react with the putty..?

Thanks for the replies, I am going to try plasticene on an old model to test it out.

I'd think plasticene is too 'greasy' and would leave residues... Also plasticene attacks plastic, though if it was on the model for only a couple of hours, I'm sure it would be ok...
