Anyone ever tried....

...using solar window tint for periscope faces?

Riffraff posted a thread about vison blocks that got me thinking. Then yesterday I had some solar reflective tint put on some windows in my house. After watching the guy do it, I thought about using the scrap stuff for periscopes.

This stuff is thinner than photographic film but has the bonus of having a water soluble adhesive backing. Just cut it to size, peel off the clear protectice plastic, wet and stick. Tried it on some scrap styrene and it has stuck well and the reflective nature looks great.

The stuff on the windows is supposed to be 'cured' with 3 -4 weeks for general wear and tear, but I think it would be fine on a kit.

The stuff is real cheap too..... I reckon you just need to ask for a sample to hold up against a window to see how it looks, and they will throw a few half A4 size sheets at you. The wonders of a salesman's reaction to a Promising SaleBig Smile [:D]

Nice tip, thanks Peter.
There was a discussion a while back about using the media material from cd's. One of the guys figured that if you broke a cd apart you could peel the shiny foil off in sizable pieces and use it for mirrors etc. I tried it on some old tinted cd's and got some nice results.

Sounds like a good idea. Definitely not something I would ever have thought of. Gotta give it a try soon.

Ron, the stuff comes in different shades from a light gray to dark gray, through darker blues to an almost black. I did not paint the scrap styrene first, as I was just checking adhesive, but it looks good as it is on the white styrene. Because it reflects light, the plastic behind it still looks dark.

I'm thinking I can also use it on clear acryllic sheet, for see through vision blocks like on the LVTP7A and such. When the hatch is popped on the real thing you can easily see through the blocks, even from a distance.

The stuff I've got is made by an Australian company, but 3M makes a good quality film and that should be easily available for you guys.
