I am building Academy 1:35 M1151 and have reached the color phase. It calls for a lot of flat black interior doors, etc, but the callout for base color is "sand yellow". Using their cross reference for MM 1742, it looks way too dark and is called dark tan. And the Humbrol keys out to black gloss.
Vallejo sand yellow (71028) looks much better and so I looked around and behold, I found an old railroad color, Pollyscale MUD.
I think it looks good but ..... I wasn't there. See what you think?!
Cheers, Jake

None of the above. Model Master makes US Army/USMC Gulf War Armor Sand which is closer (but not the same as CARC Sand. Or you can use Sand FS # 33531 for the color as how it looks when faded by the sun and desert environment. Floquil made a color called "Earth" in their old enamel railroad colors that is a good substitute as well. The new replacement "Earth" color in the new Acrlylic Model Master railroad colors is not the same color. Pass on that one for this use.
F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

Darn! knew you would have it. I guess nothing in acrylics then, but who does FS33531?
Model Master does both colors in acrylics and enamels. At least they did before they recently revamped their paint line. I don't use Vallejos so I can't say what they have in their line that would work. Tamiya would require custom mixing of something like Buff and White with a dash of some Yellow of sorts.
Thanks Carlos - I found both MM numbers in enamels, will look for acrylics. Guess another trip to Brookhurst!
I think Brookhurst stopped carrying MM acrylics. They have Vallejo, Italeri, & Tamiya acrylics now. There is an RC hobby shop near Westminster Mall, and Hobby Lobby that carry the MM acrylic lines if that is what you prefer.
If you're using Vallejo, have a look at 71075 Sand. It is supposed to be close to FS 33531. I haven't used it though, so I can't say for sure.
Yes, I think acrylics will be hard to find but I will also look at the Vallejo sand.
Another question came up - if I want to tint the windows like I see on the borax, is that clear blue or clear green?
That's box art - mu spell check gets away from itself.
Armored glass has a slight greenish tint to it. Think like an old fashion glass coke bottle.
went to Brookhurst and got paint. Think one can airbrush that Tamiya green clear? I am going to try.
Phil - just got back from the LHS where I bought MM armor sand as well as the Vallejo 71.075 Sand (ivory) with some other German? script. Anyway it is much lighter than 33531 and is actually labelled 33711.
Here are the differences. Think I will stick with the MM. Thanks.

still did not work right sorry, I will try again.
Testing, think I need to post this in rich format.

It gets dark in a hurry. Best to practice.
Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
Thanks so much for the heads up! Sure don't want that look!
For the green, start with X-22 Clear and tint it with a little of the green.
Phil - I did this before I saw your new post and think it came out properly. What I did (and I don' think it is original - think Mark Glidden told me this) is to mix clear green 50:50 with alcohol and mist it on at about 9-10". Wish I had not already placed the door glass and windshield but ......
Looks like it worked out quite nicely.
Jake, those windows came out just right. Looking at the color chips you posted, I would say go with the 33711 shade. But that 33531 chip does not look at all like any of the different paint companies version of that shade. It's too pinkish on my screen and darker than it should be.
Thanks for the encouragement with the windows. I was able to somewhat mist the windscreen but......
As to colors, I am going to airbrush some of each Vallejo 33711 and the MM and I will let you see what you think. I don't really like that lighter color but I could be persuaded. Stay tuned!
OK - here we go.
This is 3 colors shot outside in shaded light. The hoods and middle turret are MM 2136 US Gulf Armor Sand. To the left on the hood is Vallejo 71.075 Elfenbein RAL1001, Sand (Ivory), FS 33711. It is as light as it looks in the photo but a little softer. AND TO THE RIGHT IS THE ORIGINAL POLYSCALE MUD THAT I STARTED WITH Just for grins, thought I would show what a difference indoor lighting would make it. I was surprised but here it is. I am looking for impressions but I am thinking to go with the MM and then panel fade with the Vallejo.

Lighting has a major effect upon color perception. Direct sunlight, diffused sunlight, overcast, Flourescent, incandescent, halogen... Each type of lighting will give a different appearance to the same color. Especially with digital photography. Your plan sounds good for the coloring.
the ones we had overseas had dark green interiors, the only black I remember was the foam padding on hatches or around the gunner's station.

Carlos - forgot to ask you at AMPS meeting but am still trying to add color to the M1151 and wonder what color were the MG grips? Were they wooden, i think not?
I found some straps and buckles from Verlinden and may actually try to get it to Jim Frye for Orange Con. We head for New Guinea Sept. 1
New Guinea? Well that's not your standard getaway....
The grips on a .50 are either wood, or a medium brown plastic.
Carlos is spot on for the exterior color of the M1151. Tellis has the interior color right. In '05-'06 my team started with three older M1141s. All interior colors were close to the Model Master Euro Green 1. When we lost one of our Humvees to a VBIED, it was eventually replaced with an M1151 with the same color scheme, lt. sand exterior and medium green interior (MM Euro Green 1). Looks like this will be a great build.

Looks like you have the perfect tones for your base, shadows, and highlights. If you layer those up right it will trick the eyes into seeing exactly the color you think you should be seeing. Basic three color modulation. :)
