Priming Metal Parts
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 12, 2004 7:45 PM
Just received Tamiya's 1/16 R/C Sherman. Not an big fan of the particular tank, but at $411 to my door it was hard to resist (of course afterwards he offers me the Tiger I, King Tiger and Pershing at only about $80 more, next time). I'm a little while off this build but fishing for info to gather all the materials. I poured over the Tiger Group Build (great job guys!) but the sherman has more exposed metal. First, what is the best primer for the metal parts? I really want to stick to only acrylic and have an airbrush. My Tamiya flats and Iwata are perfect together but I wonder about their or other primers.

I prime my models with Plasti-kote 'sandable' automotive lacquer primer. Comes in a spray can, I use the 'gray' primer. If by chance I get it on too thick I strip it off with Easy-Off oven cleaner, and then re-spray. Been doing it for years , and, I guess have gotten the hang of it.

p.s.- I prime plastic parts, white metal parts, P.E. parts, whatever with the lacquer primer

I used Plastikote on my Tiger. Worked great. I used red though since that's the color the Germans used primarily on their tanks.
