1:48 Tamiya KV-2, Complete
Posted by YariCav on Sunday, October 11, 2015 12:29 PM

Greetings Fellow Modelers,

I've recently finished up one of my hoard of 1:40 Tamiya armor models, the KV-2.  This was built mostly OOB, with the exception of a turned metal barrel and some accessories at the back of the tank.  I tried not to beat this tank up too much, but couldn't resist putting some riccochets on the turret.  I've tried to make this tank look like it had engaged in a desperate close-ranged defense (hence the Maxim MG position at the back of the tank).  I hope you enjoy, and any comments/criticisms are welcome.  Thanks for looking!

I've added some photos below. For a full album, here's a link: http://imgur.com/gallery/dxovy

And for a little size comparison, here is the KV2 next to a Sherman "Firefly"

That turned out very well. I too like the tracks and weathering.

Nicely finished, the subtle tone variations really makes for an interesting finish. Always nice to see 1/48 armor. It's been a few years since we had a 1/48 group build.

Guess I'm just parroting everyone else but I too love the nice faded effect you've got on the paint. And the chipping looks perfect, I've tried it on bigger kits and it never looked that good to me.

And yeah, the turret on that thing, I think it's about the same size as a Stuart.

That is fantastic! I love building armor in this scale. You did such a nice job on it that it looks 1/35 to me. Love the inclusion of the Maxim on the back as well. Nice touch!

Thanks for the comments folks!  This build was my first attempt at color modulation.  It isn't very stark, but I'm glad that some of you can see the variations in the shades of green.  As for the weathering, I tried to keep it restrained, but it's hard not to dirty our tanks up!  1/48 is a fun scale; big enough to put in detail, but small enough not to take up a lot of shelf space.

very nice. is that the MMA (i think) weird russian armor green? it is one of those  colors that looks strange in the bottle but works with certain vehicles.

This isn't any out-of-the-bottle version of a 4BO color. I mixed up varying shades of green and applied them until they "looked right". Then filters of green and grey were added to fine-tune the final base coat.

Nice to know I'm not the only one around that just goes with what looks good from my pallet.

You know what you're doing! Rock on. :)
