A Bridge too Far

A great movie by my standards, Robert Redford and Sean Connery-it's good stuff. ANYWAYS, back on subject, what tank did they modify to get that weird one that they always have driving around? A friend said it was a sherman, but I am not sure. Also, what kind of tanks are the British XXX corps driving? They are not your average sherman. They have HVSS, a look almost like an easy 8. Can anybody tell me? Also, does anyone know what that weird little command car is, the one that the British officer is driving at the start of Market Garden?

PS, they also have a Scout Car Mk. II and the driver is on the right(and wrong) side

The German tanks are Leo I's. I think they belong to the Dutch army. The Shermans are a collection of runners that they pulled together for the movie. I don't recall reading where they got them from. As I recall almost all of the Shermans have some form of rubber blocked track, some chevron some plain block.

ive just scaned through the film and the only funny looking tank is a Sherman with its turret traversed and a dozer blade on the front
theres also a staghound in the film
and there is a Chaffee wreck thats pushed of the road and a M10 burning next to it
theres some Sherman fireflys and E8 shermans and i think i saw a Sexton in one of the convoys

I can only confirm Spamicus, the german tanks are Leopards, look at the exhaust ports.

What exactely is a sexton? I know it is a version of a sherman. But what does it do?

Not much more to tell .... A derivitive of the Sherman based on the Canadian Ram.

From "British and American Tanks of WWII" by Peter Chamberlain and Chris Ellis
"Essentially an 'anglicised' version of the American M7 (Priest), the Sexton was developed in the latter half of 1942 to meet British General Staff requirements for a self-propelled gun with all the mobility and characteristics of the M7 HMC(qv) but with the standard British 25pdr field howitzer in place of the American 105mm weapon".

It used a Ram chassis, basically a US M3 medium tank chassis. Has a crew of 6. Battle weight was 57000lb. Max speed was 25mph and a max cross-country speed of 20mph.

Have a real close look at some of the firefly's in the distance......they are mock up's on trucks. A friend of mine has a series of books (wheels and tracks, then and now, or some such) and I read them some years back. It had an article on vehicles used in movies, and mentioned the fact about the trucks being used a la WW2 deceptive practices.

hehe..... the super german tank. I still liked that movie though.

I saw a bridge too far in the theaters... seems like so long ago but haven't really seen it from end to end since then. I'd just randomly catch part of it while channel surfing. Really makes me want to pick it up on DVD.

Close, Subfixer! You're just one number off: those were M-47s playing the role of King Tigers in Battle of the Bulge, not M-48s.

An M-47, like this one:
