Need image sourcing help
Posted by BlackRook on Friday, November 20, 2015 10:24 AM

Gentlemen,

I have been scouring my books and the net now for about three weeks with no success.  I am searching for an image that I plan to do a diorama based on, and cannot find the damned thing.  I am wondering if anyone is familiar with the image and can point me to sources.

To my best recollection:

Two Israeli tanks (not sure if Magach or Merkava) sitting at a city street crossroads, guarding it.  The picture is frontal, taken from slightly above, as if from the opposite building a few floors up.  The tanks are each angled up one street.  I *think* that they are beside a park, but am not sure.

Any help greatly appreciated!

This is the only image I found that sort of matches your description, although I don't think they're Israeli tanks:-

I looked for a while but nothing jumped out at me. Since its a pretty generic description, was there one more detail that stuck in your mind and made it stand out?

What era are we talking? Lebanon 1982, or something more recent?

Good to see you, Smokey Joe.

OP this kind of thing is very interesting.

Initial thoughts are that Israeli armor didn't operate a lot in cities, as there aren't any they fought in. Even in Jerusalem, the streets are small and they fought a battle of encirclement in 1967 for obvious reasons. Had they advanced into Amman or Damascas, sure.

Stik is right, I thought of Lebanon too.

If you have an image in mind, there is usually a good tell. Example for me would be Checkpoint Charlie, the sign "Vous Sortez...".

A thought- can you remember any lighter stuff? Jeeps, half tracks, there often seems to be an M113.

Buses? Clapped out Mercedes taxis? That'd be West Bank.

I'm going to guess it's post 1973, outside of those borders.

Thanks, Migrant, but no, that isn't the image.  The one I saw was two tanks, in a / \ sort of situation, facing the camera just like that.

I could have sworn it was two Israeli tanks, but since no one recognizes this image, maybe I am completely off base.  I was sure that they sat at a city street crossroad, each tank pointing down one street.

There was no other vehicles in the picture that I recall, it was pretty closeup on the two pieces of armor.  There may have been barricades and sandbags, etc.

Was it a news photo?  You might google for photos of the recent Israeli conflicts like Gaza or Lebanon, but the problem will be is that there are millions of newsphotos out there.

Exactly. I think that Israeli armor has been involved in city fights in two wars- In Suez in 1973 before the Magach was modified to be distinctive from their US cousins and before the Merkava appeared, and in Lebanon in 1982.

Of course there have been several operations in Gaza and West Bank since then as well more recently.

Well, thanks everyone for the help and input.  I know I've seen this somewhere, as a good friend of mine remembers seeing it, too.  I'll post here if I ever do locate it.
