I do a lot of wargaming with armor. There are lots of scales out there, and all have a loyal following. The big ones are:

1/285th
1/72nd-1/76th-20mm
15mm

Lots and lots of stuff is available for each, but they are wargaming pieces, so they are designed to be sturdy at the expense of fine detail. Only 1/72nd-1/76 has models available that are fine quality models -- and they will break over time, trust me.

Another scale people are increasingly using is 10mm or 1/144th scale. The World Tank Museum and Dragon "Can-do" lines have tanks roughly compatible with 10mm, and the virtue is that they come ready to use. It's a fun scale to play. They are not so tiny that you can't see the infantry (like in 1/285th) but not so big that they look like toys (1/72nd). It's a nice compromise.

I haven't gamed in eons, but when it did most folks used 1/285 I believe. I think I've seen some game advertised now in 1/72 and HO.

If you're going to be wargaming with your models, I'd suggest going to as small a scale as you can handle, as gaming with 1/35 or bigger would mean huge models, and thus you couldn't fit as many onto a gaming table.
