SO MANY ROADWHEELS, SO LITTLE TIME...
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 10:12 AM
Based on responses to the earlier post about the worst part of armor (roadwheels), out of curiosity, how many of the little buggers (1/72) or big buggers (1/16) do you think you've done over time? Do you paint both sides?

Lots! The worst, for me, are the Sherman type of wheels/suspensions..! I just hate them! The HVSS are only slightly better than the VVSS..

I spray em' on the sprue (both sides ) then take em off and finish em (sand and paint rubber etc) it just gives me a bit more control over the rough process , and they dry better without the paint pooling up and drying into a chunk somewhere . How many have I done ? Way too many I am afraid !Big Smile [:D]

I haven't a clue as to how many, both in 1/35 and 1/72. I not only do both sides, I even do both sides of rubber tires for the double wheels on Panther, Tigers, etc. before I glue the wheels together.

I paint them completely, then paint the contacts. Yep, I absolutely paint both sides.
Since I only recently got into armour (a couple months ago. Prior to that, years and years of nothing but 1/48 scale aircraft) I haven't done as many as other people here. To date, the tanks I've built amount to just over 300 road wheels. With the kits I have lying around waiting to be built, that number is at least a thousand!

I'm glad you asked that. I've been keeping track:

1/72 scale: 3,250

1/48 scale: 210

1/35 scale: 10, 961

1/25 scale: 112

1/6 scale: 10

Most of the time, I just paint them black, apply 'Fuzzy Fir' (used for flocking car model seats) and giggle a lot.

Ron,

You are sick, sick, sick. You really should talk to someone about that "Fuzzy Fir" thing.Big Smile [:D]

I've done so many roadwheels, I can't even begin to count them all.
And yes, I do paint both sides.
If I didn't, I would wake up screaming in the middle of the night that I didn't paint both sides!Tongue [:P]

What I have found that works well for me is to thin the paint a little (dip your brush into whatever thinner is applicable for the paint before you dip you brush in your paint). That way the paint flows better and will follow the crevase between the rubber and the metal on the roadwheel. This makes a nice definition line between the two without the headache.

"1/35 scale: 10, 961"
Bow [bow]Bow [bow]
...that's all I have to say to that...
At my current rate, it'll take me over 20 years to get there.

Zokissima, I'm exagerating of course... sure seems like that many! (heck, one Churchill seems like a thousand or two!)

Latch, I was thinking of doing my entire BARV in "Fuzzy Fir" when I get one.... Yes, I mean something like fur, not wood. pine, fir, hmmm. Maybe pink Fuzzy Fir.... with white tracks.... maybe a throw pillow or two on top by the TC.... (that would be fun to do to a Tiger, now wouldn't it... hmmm.)

Ron,
that is an odd number of 1/35 wheels!
either there is a strange vehicle in there, or you are short a wheel?
or was it a spare?

:-)

lol, so I can relax then. No sense in starting 5 kits in a vain attempt to build up my numbers. Why I'd want to? Call it alpha male syndrome :)
Either way, I'm still fairly new to the armour game, but with the few kits I've built, and with the seemingly endless count they had, I would have fully believed your nums :)

I have done more than a dozen tanks so that is already lots of road wheels. And yes I paint and finish both sides. The most difficult road wheels so far are those of the Panzer 4 chassis as the rubber portion is thinner than that of the M4.

Hey Ron, you could do up a diorama and have the song about the 'Chevy Van' going on in the background!! lol This AFV of yours sounds like something out of the 60's to me! Could you see driving up to the beach with your boards strapped to the top of that thing??! Oh the images that are coming to mind!!! lol How are you going to attach the water bed? Where you going to hang the mirror ball? What color curtains you going to use? LOL Oh, the humanities!!! LOLOLOL

This thread needs an extraction fan. Ron isn't the only one affected by the fumes.

The extra road wheel is a spare.... gotta keep a spare around (look at my waist). Yeah, I usually, buy a kit, glue up and Fuzzy Fir the road wheels, put 'em in a diorama and throw the rest of the kit into the spares box.

By the way, what're these 'fume' things and what th' heck is an 'extraction fan' for?

Hang on... head rush... gotta lay down.

Okay. better now. I love that dragon wagon! I wonder if you could win a contest with a color scheme like that? LOL

Man, Michael, I think we've all got a pretty good idea where all those fumes went!! lol

Love the purple, though! And the dice are the perfect touch. Mirror ball might be a bit of a distraction to the driver, though!! lol

Great job!
