we just bought

The Aussie Army has recently reported that it has acquired 59 refurbished (read old'n used) M1 Abrams to replace some of our (even older) Leopards. Guess there will be a rush on M1 kits down here soonBig Smile [:D]. Heard a rumour that DML will be offloading a few kits cheap down here, in the next few weeks, and the M1 is included amongst them. Do you think they have a spy in our defense force[:0]

M1 is an interesting choice for us. Not knocking what is a fine vehicle, but the M1 is a bit fuel thirsty for our budget concious government. It is also a lot larger than the leopards, and one must question our ability to move them and provide support. New calibre guns etc will mean a change in logistics, but with only 59 tanks to worry about, I guess they think we are up to it.

I guess with Oz and the USA being such close bedfellows, we figured it was less likely that the US Govt would ever place sanctions on spare parts to us. After all, the German govt didn't want to go play in the gulf recently.

On that note, SoapBox [soapbox] when are those fundamentalist idiots going to realise that Hussein is gone and no amount of killing of soldiers or civilians is going to take things back the way it was in Iraq. It is bad enough that they kill soldiers in cowardly sneak attacks but attacking unarmed civilians, there to help improve things for their countrymen, only proves how spineless they really are.

It only proves to me here in the US that they are a little too obsesive about a past belief-
and it is good that we took saddam alive-as we don't really want Neo-Saddamists running about in 40 years-that would be bad. Real bad, if it isn't bad enough.
It makes you wonder though, what the heck are their motives-do they want power when saddam comes back? since he never will. You never can tell-they are terrorists, and that's about all there is to it-until they tell our media what they want-and why they want it-otherwise, they are murderers and scumbags, that should get targeted by some good old fashioned Paladin batterys

Ah good.. I was somewhat hesitant in the M1 because the only paint jobs it came in are NATO and desert yellow. I'm looking forward to the more subtle Aussie outback camo. Now if i could only get a perentie to go with it and I'd be happy as larry.

Hey Petbat,
Don't worry about old and used. Those M-1's will more than likely
have gone through the Reman site in Anniston Al. They will be better than
new. Probably with new powerpacks and everything dissasembled and
cleaned/replaced. Wish I could get 1 just to play with and I'm only 50 miles
away not 1/2 way around the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Hunting,
G.W.
Can I interest you in a slightly used bridge?????????????

i hear our Ministry Of Defence is planning to buy out Trumpeter after learning of its production of our Challenger tank....
...that way, they can make even more defence budget cuts and still increase the number of tanks we have! Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]
they must be hoping that al-qaeda's satelite imaging is so poor that they can't tell the diffenece between life-size and 1/35 from space!!!Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]
My 2 cents [2c]...maybe someone should tell them that they are all bank-rolled by saudia arabia, and that money is no object??!![:0]Angry [:(!]

Unfortunately, it's easier to make policies when you're sitting behind a desk and sending others out there to enforce your will...

When they are all dead.... At least that has been my experience with them and their type... I have treated more than my fair share of wounded "Al-Quaida/Taliban" terrorists in the past couple of years (three deployments to Afganistan since 9/11) and most of them are hardcore clear up until they fully realize they are going to die for "the cause" and one thing comes through loud and clear... They would rather stay alive... I have yet to run across one of them that had an ounce of bravery or beleif in what they were doing once their ambush or attack turned into a death sentence for them... That is why they are going away from direct confruntation with soldiers (this includes all of the nations that are fightings the war on terror... We know who we are) Tongue [:P] to using mines and bombs planted on the side fo the road that don't discriminate against who they kill...

I have some nice terrorists rifles for sale... never fired and only droped once Big Smile [:D]

With the addition of an APU and the new software the M1 is not as fuel thirsty as once thought and as far as the ammo, in OIF the US Army took sole responsibility for supplying Army and USMC units with all Classes of supplies including POL and ammo, so if they are fighting along side of the US, which is a reasonable assumption (Mid East, Korea....) then they can suckle of the teat of our huge combat support and combat service support units. Sounds like a better deal than some 40 year old Leo 1s that they left home in the last fight, but im biased.

No Flame intended,
Just my opinion.

The Abrams is the meanest MBT out there . Thay are fun . I have been assigned as a scout to a tank unit in Korea and all I got was the Bradley . The Abrams may truely be the King of the Battlefield ,but without scouts it would be limited.

As far as the politics are going .....Give the troops the Lock and load order. Scan your sector and fire at will ! That will tell all the idiots that we are serious. So what for humanity , and the Geneva convention... They did not care on Sept. 11th did they?

Redleg .. this is Saber Five Alpha. Fire Mission. 15 rounds HE fire at will!

Sorry for the insensitive remarks . I have friends over there, and Lost ones in the towers.

Support your troops!

ah........... crap even the ausies have better tanks then us! we're using leopard 1s! Germany sold them to us when they wanted too upgrade to leopard 2s. The canadian military was going to upgrade the technology, armour and the main gun. They upgraded the technology but nothing else!

As for my support on Iraq, i'm "sitting on the fence" Joining would imporve relations with the US, but degrade our relations with the UN. THere would be money from oil and rebuilding Iraq, but our military is small and no offence, but Iraq has turned into a blood bath with the suicide bombers and terrorist.

In Afganistan Canada was the only allied contry to have tanks, even though they had to be shipped by american transport aircraft. And Canada need Hummvees! In afganistan the canadains rented some Hummvees from the US! We currently use the itlis which is made in germany and looks like a suzuki. We lost two of them in afganistan which could have been avioded if we had Hummvees. One time when one ran over a mine (the hummvee's passenger compartment remain in tack if this happens) and when a suicide bomber jumped on the hood and blew himself up ( the hummer is too big to jump up on, and is bullet proof)

I could go on but no one would read itBig Smile [:D]

How good is the air conditioning in an M-1? I'm really curious. I see old documentaries showing the tankers in the North African campaign frying eggs on the fenders of their vehicles. I couldn't imagine being buttoned up in one during the summer in that heat.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.
