M1A1/M1A2 Abrams APUs
Posted by MartianGundamModeler on Thursday, March 18, 2004 2:55 AM
There are two optional Auxillary Power Units [APUs] available to the Abrams tanks, both a rear mounted unit and rear turret/bustle rack mounted unit. I have seveal questions regarding these:

1) Do tanks usually have one or both of these units installed?

2) What is the aux. power used for?

The APU is used to provide power without having to run the engine or drain the batteries. Earlier M1A1s had the APU mounted on the rear, now the APU is mounted in the bustle and there is only 1 APU on the tank.

Just to add to what tnker101 says, M1A2SEPs have the APU inside the left rear portion of the hull, in place of the fuel cell that had been located there. It is a fuel saving measure to use a small diesel generator to power the optics, radios and electronics instead of the turbine engine.

Thanks guys! Wouldn't the lack of the fuel cell shorten the range of the of an already fuel guzzling tank considerably or does the generator help balance it all out in the end?

Its pans out in the long run. With the M-1IPs that I crew, we have to start the engine every few hours to charge the batteries if we are using the systems without the engine running.
