Good WWI Tank Kits
Posted by usmc93 on Friday, November 18, 2016 7:28 PM

Did some searching but so far havent come up too much.  Anyone have any good recommendations for WWI tank modeles, specifically looking for 1/35 quality kit, not hung up on country/model, but would prefer med or heavy tank.  I realize its a broad range but thanks for any help. Was looking at the Emhar Mark IV Female, but dont know much about the brand/quality. I have most of my expereicne in WW2 Tamiya, Dragon for reference.

Thanks!

The Tamiya Mark IV Male is a really nice build, great fit and moderate detail,a winner for sure.

Meng makes a German A7V with an interior,I have it in the stash, somewhat more detailed, but most blogs say it's build able.

Takom has a whole line of WWII tanks which are supposed to be pretty decent.

Great thanks for the feedback, I will check them out. I have seen the tamiya for sale but if memory serves me right it was motorized which I am not interested in, but will check them all out for sure.

thanks again

That new Tamiya kit is really nice.
It's much more http://www.solnet.ee/games/g5/smiles/s1/s185.gif sophisticated than those
early motorized kits from back in the 70's.

The Tamiya motorization shouldn't be a hinderance. Based on your initial post, I recommend Tamiya. Avoid the Emhar kits

I just built the Airfix female tank. Very very nice fit up and detail to the tank.  The only weak point was alignment of the hydraulic steering unit out back.

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

Tamiya is a solid choice. I've hear good things about the Takon, but they may need internal bracing. Tamiya doesn't because it's over engineered for the motor, but you're paying for that too.

I'm in the process of RC'ing the Tamiya:

Yes,don't let the motor scare you off,its really well done,I did mine just for fun,ran it just a few times and never did again, but the gearing makes it look pretty realistic moving.

Thanks Mongoose.  Your Airfix female looks really good. I was watching a review on that kit and it got great reviews, especially the tracks!  Thanks again all for the input, i am going to the hobby shop today to possibly get something.

Ouch!  Thanks for the heads up, yea I am not interested in 1/76...not for now at least.  Thinking of going with The Takom 1/35 British MK I Female WW I , good review on youtube and it looks to be a good kit.

I think you'll be pleased with the Takom kit. I don't have their Mark I but I do have a few of their other kits and they're very nicely molded.

I started one of the Emhar kits years ago and never finished it. I've seen some people build a great model out of it but unless you're a glutten for punishment the Takom or Tamiya kit won't be the massive headbanging migrane the Emhar kit is.

The Emhar kits arrived in the early 1990s, and while they were a welcomed addition to the lack of WW1 armor, the kits were very rough and crude. RPM from Eastern Europe also did an extensive line of FT-17 tanks, again, very rough kits. Tauro did a couple as well in the 80s. I'd avoid all of these kits and aim for the Meng, Takom and Tamiya newer kits.

I'm working on Takom's Mk I Male kit right now.  It's a very nice kit.  It's well engineered and it goes together well.  The instructions are very good.  It comes with a few little PE goodies, chain, and snap together tracks.  It's a very nice kit.

It has two problems.  The cab is the size and shape of a Mk IV, which was slightly narrower than the Mk I.  There is a nice correction set available from Mr Modell Brau in Germany.

Also, the kit comes with decals for a vehicle named C19, HMLS Clan Leslie.  The particular vehicle had a grenade screen which isn't included in the kit.  However, Takom's Mk I Female kit has the screen, but it may not fit right if you use the Mr Modell Brau cab correction.

Even with these problems, I'd recommend the Takom Mk I kits, both Male and Female.  They are quite nice.  FSM's "100 years of tanks" edition from a few months ago detailed the painting of the kit.
