The Tamiya M41 is a very old kit, but is highly regarded as a beginner's kit. Cheap, easy to assemble and it looks like an American Army tank. Having said that, it has very outdated details that are thick in order to be durable because the kit was designed to be motorized and splitting the upper hull necessary to replace batteries.
In the late 90s, I had collected up about $100 worth of aftermarket accessories to bring this kit up to current standards. Fortunately, before I started the kit, both AFV Club and Skybow put out very excellent versions of this kit. AFV now owns both sets of molds, but the original Skybow version is better with finer details.
I mention this because any money put in towards bettering the old Tamiya kit would be better served in locating the AFV Club kit. It runs around $40. The Tamiya kit is $15, tracks are another $15, barrel $10, photo etch another $15 and you still don't have as nice a kit as the Skybow or AFV kits.
Any way, here is a list of the items I collected up that were designed for the Tamiya M41. Generally speaking, stuff designed for one kit, won't work well on another kit. Tracks and gun tubes are usually universal though.
- Eduard M41 Walker Bulldog #35040 $9 (probably lot less now)
- Ordnance Models A-031 $20 if you can even find it now, there are two sets, one is the resin mantlet and the other is a turret detail set
- Barrel Depot 35018 M41 76mm gun tube $12
- AFV Club tracks and suspension $25 for the both
