A simple question on T-55/62/72 tracks
Posted by CarnivourousDonut on Sunday, January 15, 2017 10:18 PM

Were they all the same?

The local hobby shop is a set (on sale!) of workable tracks for a T-72.

I am working on a Trumpeter T-62 ERA, and was wondering if the tracks would work. Failing that, does anyone have a set of rubber band tracks I could buy from you? The individual non-working track links in the Trumpeter kit I have are more of a PITA than I want to deal with.

I think the T-72 style tracks are what you need for that kit. Bring your kit's drive sprocket part into the local hobby shop and see if the links match the teeth.

What brand kit are the workable tracks?

I might have a set of single piece vinyl tracks. I'll check tomorrow and get back to you here.

When T-62s were rebuilt and modernized in the 80s, they offer received the later style "live" tracks used on the T-72. But I believe they also received a new sprocket wheel for those tracks as well. So yes, the T-72 tracks will work on your kit. BUT, unless those workable tracks are pre assembled or "rubber band" type, you will likely have lots of construction ahead to put your workable tracks together and have them workable.

They are individual track links, but the "snap" together and become flexible, which to me is much easier the ones that come with the kit that have to be glued in place around the wheels and drive sprockets.

Sadly, the box they came in were plain. The price tag covered over the name of the company and what I did see didn't ring any bells.

The box looked like this

The idea of bringing in my drive sprocket is brilliant, thank you for that.

I built the same kit about a year ago and frankly didn't have many issues with the kit tracks. I used The Doog's technique of assembling them as a run, slathering them with Testor's red label plastic cement, letting them dry for 5-10 mins, wrapping them around the road wheels while leaving a gap, letting them dry overnight, peeling them off for painting, and finally fitting them back on.

My biggest issue was sanding the sprue gates off each and every friggin' individual link. Dead

But if you really don't want to deal with them good luck with the replacements. After all it is a hobby and no point of wasting time on something you really hate doing.  Wink

Those T-72 tracks are by Trumpeter. I have a set in my stash.

I have the Tamiya T-55 and T-72 kits, and I don't need the belt tracks.  PM me if you want them.

Those Trumpeter links look much better than the SKIF set that I have.

You probably wont be able to match the links of the Trumpeter workable set to your sprocket because it would require some partial assembly first. Doubt that you need to though, they are also Trumpeter.

If you haven't taken the others' offers yet, let me know. I can send them to you and trade you for the indies that came with the kit that you don't like.
