Battle of Kowel reference question
Posted by Tankluver on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 7:11 AM

Ive been regaining interest in the battle of Kowel after rewatching some newsreels. I seem to recall that there was a book out about the battle but not sure. Also another question I have but cant seem to recall where I read it was is it true that the Commander of the Wiking division defied Hitlers orders to break through to Kowel and rescue his men?

The Battle of Kowel is covered on pages 89-106 of Armor Battles of the Waffen SS, 1943-45, by Will Fey. The account is written by Obersturmführer Nicolussi-Leck, commander of 8th company, SS Panzer Regiment 5, who lead the breakthrough into Kowel. He was already heavily engaged with Russian Flak and artillery units and had determined it was "impossible to stop", when he disregarded orders from battalion commander Bolm to stop. "...apart from that, he was not my superior."

I'm sure this is to be found in other books as well, but this account was writted by the officer in question.

Yes I have the book at home, I do recall something along the lines of him basically saying Im going to get my boys out. But wasnt it Hitler who gave the orders to stop and Bolm was relaying them?

SadI have some rare refs on the battle I'd love to share, but I'm being moderated so by the time this post is approved and you read it you'll probably have moved on by then...
