Another Panther question
Posted by Kentucky Colonel on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 5:24 PM

While doing research on Panthers I came across several pictures of both real Panthers and models of Panthers that had extra sheets of rusted steel on the top of the turret, the top of the tank and on the air intake in the back. I'm guessing this is extra armor put on by the crews?  Anybody have any info I just don't know Panthers that good. Are there certain model kits that have this and/or there any PE lits and which Panthers use it??

Save your cash. Those plates would be a simple scratch built item.

Listed as "modifications after issue to the troops" to be performed by field units; "Starting in December 1944, fabricate protective covers from pieces of Schuerzen and install the covers for the rear deck." - Jentz, Germany's Panther Tank, page 102.

While generally fitted to late Ausf G's at this date, they could be fitted to existing earlier models as well, although photos of this occuring might be hard to find.

This was also done on a limited basis to the turret roof, usually with sandwiched pieces of scrap armor sheet.

I'll go with what DM says. Unless your buying a larger PEset which includes these, and several company's do, you can make your own with some thin sheet stryene.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Tamiya once released a special edition Panther G with a photoetch set that included those plates.  I don't know if they still have it, but it makes for an interesting model.

Voyager has this as an add-on. This set includes the turret top armour.
