thundergod is mixing variants. The circular sight (CITV) is only found on the M1A2 or M1A2SEP. The 8-tubed smoke grenade launcher is a USMC item and would be incorrect for a US Army tank. Additionally, if the coax tube was missing from the right side of the gun tube, that was probably battle damage (or it just broke off) since it is little more than a steel tube welded to some cooling fins.

There was a pretty good mix of early M1A1s and late M1As (what folks call M1A1HA) in the first Gulf War, but during OIF, the M1A1"HA" was the only US tank rolling until the 4th ID showed up with M1A2SEPs.

The generators are now in the storage rack. not in the rear though I have found one pic that does show it the smoke dischargers also are different they look morelike the ones found on the brit's challanger 2's also I have found not all M1's hane the long barreled gun port found right side of the 120 mm also you will need to add the new sight which is up on the front lefttop of turret where there is a raised circle shape...I am finishing up my conversion of a M1 from desert storm also the Taimya kit. check out the M1 forum i think there is a few links there you can check out.

Thanks Major,
I Really appreciate the info. Sounds like very little extra work to make the conversion. Do you know of any web sites where I can find some pics of the extended bustle rack and the new mount for the APU?

The flat squares on the front of the turret are CIPs as well. There would be 2 flat and 3 louvered CIPs on a tank. The tank would have the bustle rack mounted APU and not the hull mounted one. Hull one has been out of service for over a decade.

I guess that the only thing missing from the DML kit besides the CIPs would be the extended bustle rack.

Baghdad M1 Question
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 8:54 PM
I want to build an M1A1 HA depicting the Thunder Run of the 3rd ID into Baghdad. Since I've already got several M1 kits, I really don't want to buy another just for a few modifications. Actually, one of the kits I have is the DML kit of the M1A1 HA from Dessert Storm. Can any of you guys help a helicopter dude with a few questions? Other than the Combat Identification Panels ... what do I need to add? Are there three CIPs? One on the back turret bustle and one on each side? What's the raised squares on the front of the turret? (there's one on each side of the front plates of the turret.) Would any of these tanks have the generator attached to the rear? And finally ... what would the markings on the tanks be? I know that's a lot but any help would be greatly appreciated.
