Yes!!  Once the question about weathering armor is asked, it's all over.  The turn to the dark side is complete.

I am no expert on weathering, but I like Bish's response due to the control over the effect that gives.

I used an acrylic wash as a fixer, which worked well where I wanted the dust to accumulate, but not so well for a lighter covering.  I got actual brush strokes on the model when I went for a lighter coating, which I did not want.

Try using a little dry on a brush to see what effect you get.  I found that not using anything but the pigment gave a subtle, but noticeable dusty effect.

Happy to hear you are enjoying armor.

As an alternative to binder, mix some pigments with a small amount of water and a tiny drop of washing up liquid and slop it on. Once dry you can remove the excess. You can also just dust the pigment on dry for lighter dusting.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

That depends on how thick you apply it. That binder is basically just your average white glue. So anywhere from a few minutes to hours, depending on thickness, humidity, and temperature. Standard white glue drying times apply.

Thank you both for the feedback!  I'll avoid the AB when it comes to the pigments.  Ill also spray the matt coat prior to pigment application.  About how long does it take the binder to dry once the pigments are applied?

DO NOT RUN VALLEJO PIGMENTS THROUGH YOUR AIR BRUSH. Unless you absolutely hate your air brush.

You simply slop it on with a hairy stick. What's nice is that you can add washes and filters to it even after its dried and change the uniformity.

I'd also recommend Tamiya's weathering kits. You get some nice effects out of those as well.

I wouldnt run pigments thru my airbrush, and yes the dullcoat will lessen the effects of your pigments,it can even dissolve them completely.Pigments hold up pretty good, save them for last, and just handle carefully, they will hold up.

Weathering tips needed.
Posted by Mopar Madness on Saturday, July 8, 2017 10:41 AM

Hello friends!  I'm new to the world of armor modeling and I'd like to add another dimension of weathering to my latest build.  I'm making a 1/35 Tamiya Panzer III and I'd like to add some coats of dust.  I bought some Vallejo pigment "dust" and pigment binder from my LHS.  Question, can I combine the pigment with the binder and airbrush the mixture into the model?  If I apply a matt coat after application, will the matt absorb the pigment and null the effect? I use Gunze Super Clear from a spray can. Lastly, are the pigments a better option than just "dusting" the model with a buff color from the airbrush? Thank you for your help! Smile
