Personally, I usually paint WWII era US armor tracks in a base of dark iron or rubber black (tamiya colors), then dry brush with aluminum to bring out the details. I'm sure there are more accurate colors depending on the specific subject you're working on, but I usually weather up the tracks to the point where using accurate colors is hardly noticible. I'd take a look at the armorama link someone posted (that site has tons of great info on armor subjects), but just starting out, I'd think my color scheme would probably work well for you.

Tank tracks are made from two materials primarily: steel and rubber. So your basic colors will be for those. The steel wears in use and any coatings or rust is ground off. But the steel does tend to take on a burnished earth tone except for those areas that have constant metal to metal contact, which gets more polished looking.

sorry, but I'm writing this away from home, I don't have the model details, just the basics. Like I said, I'm new to this.

It's an American WW2 tank.
That narrows it down to several models. Tamiya did an M3, M4, M4A1, M4A3, M4A3E8, M5A1, M8. The latest M4A3E8 had all metal tracks. They tend to have a brown/sand look to them. Take a look at a bulldozer at a construction site and you will get an idea of the color.
The other tanks have rubber track pads, but the metal portions would be the same.
By the way, with the same effort it took to type "WW2 American tank" you could have typed the exact model kit you have and make it easier on us in helping you to answer your question.
Wow, didn't know this. I'm new to this. I'm probably going to stick with the same olive drab to make it easy. Thanks for your help.

Again, it depends on the tank and what tracks were fitted. For example, the Sherman had quite an array of track types, some all metal, some with rubber pads.
Depends on the tank. A modern American tank will have different color tracks than a WW2 German tank.
