I'll admit to having about 40 years experience building kits and have seen many changes for the better and just how far since the 1970's the hobby has come.

I will admit to not knowing if my Takom king Tiger kit is/was suffering from some undetected warping of the lower hull but when fitting the plating that the bottom of the turret basket fits around, the two smaller front and rear parts just didn't want to go into the gaps at all and were too wide. I would have had to cut them to fit in place by about 1mm and that would have meant that the turret basket would not have sat correctly.

It could have been me though not paying attention Who Knows!

I am going to have a bash at their Panther with interior when that appears and I hope that my pleading on facebook not to mould ammo to racks will be listened to. If Meng can do it, so can takom!!!

I probably shouldn't mention it on the armour section, but my next kit purchase will be Zoukei-Muras' new Do335 A-12!

For the exterior paint I would go with Vallejo's model air RAL 6003 and RAL 8017 They're accurate for the green and brown. For their Dunkelgelb RAL 7028 (71.025) that is actually the Dunkelgelb Nach Muster which oblky saw service during Operation Citadel. It changed whaen that operation ceased so Tiger II's never had that on. you could try adding a little brown or green to tone it down.

For closer to the original you should try this

From late December 1944 the base colour changed to RAL 6003.

Dunkelgelb also changed in shade to close to the following

Here is a good source, although black and white

This picture we can actually locate to a unit, location and date. This tells us lots about the vehicle and the colours when you look into German archives.

This photograph was taken on October 15, 1944 in St Georges Square, Budapest, Hungary. This (233) and 3 other Tiger II tanks from  503 Heavy Tank Batallion were supporting a small ground force of German troops during an uprising.

The paint on the tiger II is fresh as this unit had just bee re-equipped to replace losses and as other readers not is different.

THis vehicle and the rest of the second company of the 503 were taking part in field trials of the green base coat, which shows on the lower part of the tank. You can clearly see that the road wheels and lower hull behind them are not Dunkelgelb which is much less prominent than being the base coat.

THe Tank was manufacured before the zimmeritt application was stopped (9th September 1944) as Zimmeritt is clearly seen on the turret and upper hull sides and other pictures of this vehicle puts the manufacture date as probably the last 2 weeks of August 1944.

It may not be easy to see but the predominat colour of this vehicle is RAL 6003 broken up by RAL 7028 and RAL 8017

Interesting and valuable info. I've encountered no fit issues so far but am only about a third through. As for painting the ammo I've been pretending it isn't there but I'm far enough along that I'll have to confront it very soon.

The Mig colour set is not accurate as Mig colours are "scale correct" and not chipset correct.

If you want to use totally accurate colours then these are the ones:

Vallejo Model Air 71.271 RAL 8012 Primer Oxide Red

Vallejo Model Air 71.075 RAL 1001 Elfembein (ivory)

Vallejo Model Air 71.268 RAL 6006 Feldgrau

Vallejo Model Air 71.116 RAL 7008 Graugrün (often seen on vehicle transmissions).

If you don't believe me then I will, given chance, create chipsets of both MIG and Vallejo Red Oxide primer and photograph them side by side.

I am in Preparation for building Mengs Tiger II with the interior set Etc. I have a partially complete Takom Tiger II (Henschel) but gave up when I started having major fit issues for no real reason, as well as a total nightmare with the shells moulded onto the racks. Painting those..... OMG!!

IN contrast, although the meng is two seperate boxes (3 if you choose the trackset, but half that is duplicated in the interior set and I'll be using Friul tracks) and the Ammunition is seperate to the racks which makes things much easier. I have invested in  AM turned metal shells from Eureka XXL.

German ammunition was parkerised steel from around 1938 onwards as brass was in short supply and the cases were painted and laqeured in different colours ranging from just the steel colour through medium and dark grey, a pale gold, bronze, a pale brass and a green colour. You may wish to do some extra research for that.

This is terrific. I was aware of the Mig paint set but hadn't seen the build review. I'm sure I now have everything I need to figuire out the paint issues.

Hello jeffpez,

I have the same kit, but with the porsche turret. Mig actually makes a paint set for this model and the exact colors, they have an interior and exterior set. Here is the link to the interior paint set for the king tiger with 6 assorted colors.

http://www.migjimenez.com/en/acrylic-colors/817-king-tiger-interior-color-special-takom-edition-vol1-.html

The interior color is painted with a red oxide color, while the vertical wall parallel to the front of the tank, and the topmost flat sides (parallel to length of tank) are painted in the Cremeweiss color (cream like color).

Look through the site above and you can find some pictures, it should help you get the idea.

Takom King Tiger interior colors
Posted by jeffpez on Sunday, October 15, 2017 2:49 PM

I just got this kit (item 2073 with the Henschel turret) and find there are no interior color callouts in the instructions. After searching I've found small pictures of what appears to be a seperate color sheet showing the interior colors but my kit doesn't have one. Does anyone have one they can scan and post or emil me? I would assume all of the three versions of the Takon Tiger they make are the same so any version should help. Thanks.
