The M972F (Flatbed)/w Excavator
Posted by Tiking on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 5:21 PM
This is a build I have been working on for some time now. It's a heavy modification of the M915 kit from Trumpeter. As always, I decided to spice things up a bit. I wanted to do something different. So, I kit-bashed the trailer and tractor to bring forth this combo unit. As far as I know this truck version does not exist. But it could have been plausible. The name came about by using the first number of the M915 and the 2 last digits of the M872 trailer. Hence, M972, which is a combination of both.
The Hitachi excavator is from Hasegawa which I built as a burnt out model. The idea came from the pic I found while searching the web. Lots of pics. Hope you like the results.

Exactly what Goldhammer said! I think his statement sums it up perfectly!

Oh yeah, it is beautiful work! You've got some serious technique on, and we know it for some time now!

I personally find it a kind of pity that you didn't go for more realism. I mean yeah, it's very realistic model of a truck that's not very realistic :-) I wish you did a conversion to something real - but that's me.

Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

To my mind, new at armor, this is a sensational build! None of it looks like plastic to me, it all looks as if it's real. I'm off to the land of Nod thinking about this build.

Oh wow! With some photo manipulation of the background I'd swear I were looking at the real thing!

Esp love the worn look on the tires, the rust on the excavator body and treads, and the dirty stained truck bed.

It does look good and the weathering is top notch.  I agree with Pawel though.  Your skills on an actual vehicle would be put to much better use.

Not really since it is not of a "real thing".  There is no such vehicle as an M972.

Ok guys. I understand everyone has the right to their opinion but this is modelling and how one decides to build is totally up to them. Or is it not the case. I already stated the truck is not of a real vehicle but such a truck is plausible or not. Weather it's a flatbed or not it is still a vehicle. I am not going to crash on your views as I know you well and how you are a stickler for authenticity. Nothing wrong with that. But it's modelling. And I think Camera was only referring to to the aspect of the model looking real in general. Just thought I'd voice my view before someone else decides to blow this way out of proportion. Not mad just trying to have fun modelling. I hope this hobby is still adheres to the basic principle of yesterday's. :)

Thanks for your comment.

No one said you can't build what you want the way you want to.  It does look good, as we stated.  Some of us just don't see the point to "what-if's" when there are lots of great actual vehicles that can be built.  To each their own though.  Also, if you post something, you should be prepared for all commments, positive and negative.

I am prepared for all. That is not the issue. In that case you should also be prepared for a rebuttle. ;) like I said. I am not angry. And I did say you have a right to your opinion too. So please do not get upset. I remember we having a similar incident back in the day on Armorama. Remember? Anyways I am not trying to start a fight. I respect your views. So respect mine. Still love your work. Peace.

No worries, all is good.  I am not upset at all.  Just clarifying my point.

Fictional or not, that's nice work. How long were you at the bench to create this?

Excellent build, looks convincing to me. There are small, random details on the flatbed that add to the overall realism of the model. Many casual observers would never guess that this is not an actual vehicle. Very creative both in subject and in finishing.

I guess if one is not well knowledge( Not that I am) in the US military fleet, than they would think that particular variant does exist.

Sorry, Tiking did say it wasn't a 'real' vehicle. I meant he caught the essential 'truckness' look even if the real thing doesn't exist. Kinda like someone can do a 'realistic' model of a paper panzer.

We sell or provide a lot of military equipment to other nations and there's no telling what they do to them once they put them into use. It is something feasible, that's why it looks so convincing.

Exactly. That was my thought when I started this project. Nothing is just black or white. Maybe somewhere out there someone has done just that. Here in Sweden, modification is nothing new. Mostly they are privatiers that make most of heavy mods and transformation quite interesting.

Awesome attention to detail, your an insperation to me to become a better modeler, right up there with Doog, Heavy Arty, and others. Well executed "basics" IMHO Tiking. Happy Modelling.

Hey Tiking, your weathering technique is beyond excellent.  The details are well thought out and executed.  Like Armornut, I aspire to have that level of skill someday.

Thanks for posting, I really enjoyed looking at these pics.
