The Panzer III Ausf J with the L/60 gun and without the additional spaced armor was a "very rare" vehicle in North Africa, (Jentz, Panzertruppen, Vol I, page 180). It was first issued to the DAK in March of 1942, (also Jentz, Panzertruppen, Vol I, page 180) . Since order HM 1942 #315 (Tropen II) wasn't issued until March 25th, 1942, and "The old yellow brown / gray green paints were to be used up, so they would have been in use for months after the new orders were issued." (Culver, Panzer Colors, page 46.), it is more than likely that these first L/60 armed Ausf J's were painted in the earlier scheme of RAL 8000/7008.
AK-Interactive's DAK Profile Guide Book, page 69, shows a color drawing of 1st Co., Panzer Reg. 5, 21st Pz Div. Ausf J, with the later model, added spaced-armor, still in the older Tropen I scheme as well.
