Usually, just the left side is a red oval though.  Not sure what is going on w/the above tank, maybe a restoration.  The right side is the blackout drive stop light (top slit) and also looks like a short dark strip, not a full red oval.  

 

It was the standard setup for military vehicle rear lights from pre-WWII until the '70s when replaced by the larger NATO lights.  It is still present on some modern vehicles like M113s.

The top ones are service drive tail lights and work like regular car tail lights; i.e. low red when your lights are on and bright red when you apply brakes. They only work when the headlights are turned on.

The bottom strips are blackout drive markers. A series of white lights are behind the strip. If you can see the individual little ticks of light, you're too close (while following in a convoy). If the ticks of lights look like one light per side, you're too far away. If you can see two distinct lights on each tail light side, then you are at the proper interval from the vehicle in front of you.

Im Finding Pictures Of Stuart's Withs Red Tail Lights But People At My Model Club Said That One Was Blue The Other Red.If Anyone Can Tell Me What To Paint The Tail Lights I'd Greatly Accept Some Facts.
