My father started his National Guard service in Michigan in 1950. When they moved to California in 1952 he spent weekends at Camp Roberts.

He was on the M40 GMC, which was a HVSS as you know.

He decided one weekend he had too much to do at home to go. When the MP's came and dragged him away from his desk at United, Mom could only say "I told you so".

There are some references to M16 tracks in the German Army post war, I'd assume they were all over the place in that country.

They look to be solid dark green.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

It’s always interesting to go out on an old range and see if you can ID what some target hulks were, based off of the remians.

I fired some live missiles at some M103 hulks. Hard to mistake those for anything else, and if you miss, you’re not even trying.

At Camp Roberts I remember coming across something based off a M4 VVSS  hull, but it was so shot up, the bogies were the only thing you could ID. At Hohenfels I recall seeing, in passing by, something that looked to be of German WWII origin. But I did not get a good close long look to ID that hulk either. It was just not a post war torsion bar suspension design.

Our ranges are full of 432 and Chieftan tank hulls. Never got to fire a MILAN at one but plenty of 30mm. I am just glad they saved the Schmaltürme from a range while tehre was stillsome of it left. never know what you might find in those places.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Now that's funny! I'm sure a shrink would have some interpretation of that for you. Maybe you really want a Bud. Or maybe a German beer! ;-)

I know we got the halftrack from Baumholder which was a large US Army base in Germany with tank ranges. If you search those key words, you may find some old photos of vehicles used as targets.

I don’t know if they used the M3 Half Track, but they did use the M16 MGMC version. They did have full tracked M39 carriers when they were first formed in the 50’s.

Here is a good link to various vehicle types used by the Bundeswehr.

That’s interesting and pretty cool. I didn’t realize the Bundeswehr had M3s until i read about it but i still haven’t had any luck finding pictures of it.

I don't know of any, but when I was stationed in Mannheim, we rescued a former Bundeswehr halftrack that was destined for the range as a hard target. The battalion cleaned it up and it became our change of command and special event vehicle. It still operated in 1989-90. I know there are some of the restored pictures of the vehicle on Facebook, but not in German markings.

Are there any pictures of the bundeswehr using M3 half tracks?
