Gentlemen,

What is this? A "Koenig Ferdinand" even if I never heard of that.

Thank you!

Pretty impressive if you ask me! Have no idea what it is but that would look cool sitting on my shelf though.

Looks like a 1/72 model with a big pen stuck on the end of it to me!

I have no idea what it really is!

Ahem..... It is Gun #1 of the Friedrich August Battery on the Channel coast near Wimille. A 30.5 cm SK L/50 by Krupp, model 1906. Page 24, Fortress Europe, the Atlantic Wall Guns, just in case you want the references.

This photo was taken in September of 1940, as it sat in an open firing position. Later, it was covered by a large concrete bunker. 3 guns of this type were in this battery. Maxium range was 32,500 meters, it could reach the habors of Dover and Folkstone. For the most part, this battery served as a instructional battery for the training of naval artillerymen. Sorry, no tracks or rails, just a pedestal mount. Here are the remains of this battery; http://users.skynet.be/satimage/atlant/fa/fa.htm

Elevation and shell insertion could be operated electrically, traverse aiming was done by hand. During training, all gun movements were done by hand.

Then those cogs would go with those systems.

This may sound odd but honnestly it does not looks to be the same thing. My picture seams to have a drive sprocket in the forehead of that "chassis" ( let's call it that way )

Have you zoomed the pic I placed?

Nuno, that 'Wheel' does not seem to appear on the other side. Probably an 'illusion' caused by the camo net..?

I have the picture you placed, along with 15 other photos of this battery. Trust me, I'm not making this up. This is not a mystery weapon, I recognized the photo immediately.

Just realized something everyone-nuno-your pic is different than peridexton's! [:0] Peridexton's looks like the actual thing, but nuno-yours looks like it's been messed with. nuno's has a computer-generated looking cogwheel, while peridexton's looks real. Does anybody see this?

I agree totally ArmorMaster

The picture in the first post has been very badly "retouched" to look like it has a "cog".
I'd go with peridexton's photo and explanation.

The two pics are the same. Nuno's may have been touched up considerably. If it was done for a newspaper, it was probobly converted to a 80-100dpi halftone. If it was copied out of a book then it would already have a 180 to 200 dpi halftone and combining the two would make moire pattern. If this was the case you would be 3 generations away form the original image used as well, further distorting the image.

Looking at Peridexion's image you can clearly tell that its not a cog but camo netting creating an illusion. Honestly I don't think Nuno's image is photoshopped. It was probobly some pressman't attempt to scratch a photo retouch into the printing plate...

Thanks to both of them for the cool image though.

OK, I finally see the point of contention here. Dunce [D)] Sorry, I just immediately looked up the reference without closely examining Nuno's photo, since the photo was familiar to me. Nuno's photo has been retouched, and in more than one place. At the right front corner, (from the perspective of us, the viewer), I now see the "Wheel" on Nuno's photo. This object is not on my photo. There are two other smaller "wheels" a little farther back on the gun carrage. When you view Nuno's photo blown-up, you can see these are rather poorly drawn, they aren't even in the correct perspective. This was obviously a half-baked attempt by some German PK operative to make this weapon appear as something other than what it actually was, in this case, making it appear as some kind of super self-propelled gun. An interesting comparison of photos. Those crafty Germans, can't trust them as far as you can throw a coastal battery! Evil [}:)]
As a further note, I shouldn't even be looking at this right now as I am heavily sedated from just having had dental implant surgery for a tooth that I managed to blast out of my head. It's little wonder I can't see the obvious. I know, that excuse only goes so far, what about every other day? Tongue [:P]

You guys do realize yesterday was April Fools, don't you?

I'd bet the newspaper was doing a prank.

I still think it looks like it has a fountain pen stuck on the front end!! But I think it's a pretty cool photo.
