Tamiya Sherman M4A3E8 after market?
Posted by Johnny1000 on Thursday, October 18, 2018 9:21 AM

Hi guys

I'm thinking about cracking into the Tamiya easy eight ('45). I haven't touched an armor subject since I was a kid, so I'd like to keep the build somewhat simple, but I'm not opposed to adding on a few goodies if they'll elevate it in an obvious way.

The rubber tracks look a bit iffy out of context. Worth replacing? I know Fruil makes T-66 (that's the right track?) but that seems like such a project. Anyone else make something simpler than Fruil but better than rubberbands? (Or, given that Sherman tracks are taut, and you don't need to model any sag, is it worth it?)

Anything else worth addressing? Fender, gun barrels, etc?

Thanks so much

I would use the Tamiya track or look at AFV Club tracks, not sure which one. I know you said not too much, but I grabbed the Legend set to make it into" Fury",I am chomping at the bit for that one. As far as other AM,it depends on what you want to do or spend,I have seen some nice OOB builds on it also.

Personally if it were my first tank kit in years I'd probably just build her straight from the box and concentrate on just getting everything straight and the paint and weathering right. As Tojo said it can be built into a really sharp looking model straight outta the box.

I wouldn't worry too much about the tracks, as you say the tracks are 'live' without any sag so the rubber band effect will look fine with them. You can pick up a turned metal gun barrel, which are nice, they save you from all the careful sanding but I'm not sure you need to add one.

If you really want to add some PE you might pick up a set of Eduard US headlight guards. They look much better than the thick plastic parts and are fairly cheap and easy to apply. PE periscope guards also are an improvement but they're a PITA (at least for me to apply).

One of the biggest and simpest things for a Sherman is to add some storage. If you look at any photos you'll see piles of knapsacks, rolled-up tarps, cardboard ration boxes, etc strapped or heaped up on the vehicle. You can buy these, make them yourself, or if you know any armour modelers they probably have a box of storage goodies from old Tamiya kits.
