It was during the Liberation of Caen. After being beaten back by Panzers we finally managed to break through with a pair of Shermans. We crossed the bridge and engaged a Panzer. Chris and I opened fire as we came past the two thankfully unmanned PaK 40's. Chris hung back at a distance and drew the Panzers attention. While the Panzer was trying to adjust fire for distance I took advantage of the Germans concentration. I noticed he was parked fairly far forward from the centre of town, leaving an allyway unchecked behind him. I broke right at about 45 degrees to his line of sight, keeping speed up and heading for cover behind debris and a crashed B-17. I carefully rumbled through the allyway and peeked (as far as you can actually peek with a Sherman tank) around the corner. Great! He hadn't noticed I had broken away from formation and was still engaged with Chris. I came out of the ally and closed the distance to guarantee a kill. I fired one round and damaged him, but as he was engaging Chris, I think he must have figured that damage came from his Sherman, not mine. A second round from me finished him off and we continued on our push through the lines.
Unfortunatly we got into trouble as we manouvred through the streets. As we were heading west through the town, I noticed a fresh Panzer coming from the North. Chris was too far down the other street already to assist. The panzer got the first shot off and despite my best efforts I couldn't stop him. I had to engage so quickly I couldn't warn Chris about the panzers position, and he was also taken by surprise.
It was back to the old drawing board again...
