Help-- what are some good WWII tank kits
Posted by Models32466 on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 8:20 AM

So Started witha King Tiger, went to M40 and M109 and have Tamiya M1A2 OIF on my work table (don’t have a work bench).  Purchased four Tamiya Kits Sherman Easy Eight, M3 Lee, M3 Stuart and Walker Bulldog.

Would like some ideas on German Tank WWII kits. I like the Tamiya but not Married to the brand, just don’t know enough about the other Brands.  Struggled with the Meng T90.

Looking for about three Kits to Balanace out the US Version.

Thanks in Adavnce

Takom is making some really nice Panther versions, and some with full interiors. They have a decent price point too.

Tamiya has some nice German armour kits. There Tiger Early and Mid production, Pz IV J, Panthers and Tiger II. You can't really go wrong with any of them.

As Bruce and Bish said Takom and Tamiya make really good stuff.

Meng, Rye Field, Amusing, Trumpeter, Hobby Boss, and the newer Academy stuff is really good too.

A web search will come up with piles of reviews. Armorama and Perth Military Modeling do lots of reviews for just two sites.

Kind of depends on what you want in a kit. Detail? Ease of build? From my experience, Dragon is a good mix of both, but some of the newer kits with high parts counts turns me off. There is such a thing as over-engineered. That being said, I enjoyed their Elefant and Jagdtiger. For tamiya, the last two I finished were their Pz III L and the Jagdpanther. Fun kits.

Well you allready tackled the Meng T-90 so I guess you are not new to the hobby ;)

You have to get yourself a Pz.Kpfw.VI Ausf.E (Tiger I).

Dragons 6383 would be my first choice.

Comes with molded zimmerit and depicts a late production version, (steel rimm wheels).

Only drawback with a Tiger I is that there are so many experts arround.

Which on the other hand is an advantage as well if you are not worried about criticism.

The other side of the stick is Tamiyas Hetzer (#35285).

This is a beautiful little kit that builds with ease and makes a very enjoyable project.

Is there any specific arena or timeframe that you are particullary interested  in?

I know I mentioned Dragon, but if you want to go the Tamiya route, their new kits are simpler to build, but less detailed then Dragon, but still very nice.

Jagdtiger

Jagdpanzer IV

Panther

Elefant

All of recent vintage and pretty nice.you should google any kit your interested in,you should find a myriad of build logs and reviews.

No, he meant Dragons 1/35th Tiger I late production.

I would deffinetly avoid Dragon kits for now, at least their newer ones. Apart from often being complicated to follow the instructions, there prices have gotten silly and other companies have started to over take them with better kits at a better price.

The better tact is to first decide what vehicle you want to build.  Then ask who makes the easiest to build, best detailed, most accurate, etc. kit of that vehicle.  You will get much better answers that will actually direct you to a kit to buy as opposed to all the wide-ranging opinions above.

So,if you mean Tamiya,I can tell you that their Jagdtiger is an excellent build,I think it comes with indie tracks and one piece,I went with metal if its in your budget, but that kit is a great choice.

Since I already love Tamiya. The way they go together and the detail. Is there any brand their equal that doesn’t have 3000 parts

Bish is right off course - a lot has happend in the time I have been inactive.
And Dragons  instructions did not magically improve themselfes...

I still think that 6383 is a very good choice since it comes with the Zimm molded on.

Saves you hours of work or ~ $ 25 for a resin set.

But I had a look at Spruebrothers and 6383 is not even available :|

Rye Field comes at $ 67.49 with a full interior. The kit has had very good reviews.

Trumpeter has a zimmed version at $ 47.99.
Have only seen one review but that was positive.

And the XLNT AFV Club is only $ 37.49.
You will need to get yourself a resin Zimm set for this one though (see above).
I will get one myself :)

If you'd like a simple, easy, super quick build, why not Tamiya's Panzer Kampfwagen II Ausf. F/G
