Roadwheel damage
Posted by lizardqing on Sunday, April 4, 2004 5:28 PM
Ok y'all , I need to know if it would have been possible for steel road wheels to have gotten lets say bent and warped. Particulary smaller thin ones. Seems there was a mishap somehow between a couple of road wheels and heat source. The cause of the mishap is still under investigation.

I've seen the early Tiger wheels with both bullet holes and torn hubs so I imagine a little warpage wouldn't be out of the question. The steel ones are a different story, can't say I have seen damage other than chips and rust or missing altogether.

No rubber just steel. They sure look like they could have gotten a pretty good chunk of granite or something hung between them. Here is a pic of the damage.

A road wheel that damaged would be unserviceable, it would throw the track. Unless is is to be a wrecked vehicle, you need to cast some replacements.

Why not? I assume there are some straight ones left you can use as masters. It's either that, AM wheels, or heat them up and try to straighten them.

I've got a set of AFV Club SdKfz 251 wheels and tracks (AF 35043). They were relatively cheap, less than $10-12. This means the Tamiya wheels I have that came with the SdKfz 251 kit I have will be excess.

Well these are for that devil of a kit, ketten krad. I have just about taken to the idea that this kit is cursed or something. Looking more and more like it is going to be Sherman fodder after all.

Hmmm. Normally I would say mud. Lots of mud.
Don't know if that would work this time. Perhaps you could heat them up again and just make the damage a little less pronounced. Or make it into the Sherman mat it was destined to be. Would make interesting rubble in a diorama too.

Forget resin casting, aftermarket bits or even trying to straighten them.. Try an exorcism..

Gee, why didn't I think of that? Which works better, chicken blood or cow's blood? What is so scary about casting a replacement anyway? Beats trashing the whole kit.

I don't think its resin casting so much, just that the kit is cursed.

I do believe I starting to get a few ideas for a dio with the Sherman with this thing the more I look at it. Especially if they wont go back to normal with some heat and mud.

I may have some laying around from an old Nitto kit, I'll get back with you, of course the Nitto wheels are anything but neato.

Alrighty then! I do have a spare Nitto Kettenrad. It's been assembled and then dropped on the floor,Cool [8D] but it does have road wheels. You're welcome to them. They don't have the nice hubs on them, but a little surgery could fix that. Email an address and I'll send it to you.Smile [:)]
